Calling All Steering Experts...How Do I Fix This?

    I've got a '71 CJ-5 with power steering, Saginaw box and some custom shaft work. Everything is great but the U Joints are sloppy. How do I find replacement components?

    The shaft needs another support if you are going to use two u-joints. And they are definitely out of phase. Good eye, Terry.
    Something like this for multiple u-joints, red arrow:

    Looking at the 1st pic again, I don't think it is possible to use that joint and have the ends be in phase. It's just made incorrectly.

    I removed the fender...Here's a pic. There is a support but the double U-joint has to be replaced...It's too sloppy. It looks like I'll have to cut the steering shaft...I'm afraid I won't have much left to work with.

    Looks like it can be done with one joint. The age old question, do you know a good welder? Not a job for a ex brother in law with a 110 welder. Shafts and joints are available from many places. I have been using Speedway Motors stuff for a while. Flaming River makes some with set screws that don't require welding if you have the right length shafts to begin with.

    Yup - adapt the shaft at the column to use 3/4 Double D shafts. Use a proper layout with pillar blocks if needed (normally where you have the short piece). The Double D with proper joints allow for assembly and dis-assembly. You should also have a slip joint in there if you don't have enough geometry. You don't want the shaft driven back into you via the column in an impact.

    I think D shafts are a lot easier, I am with Warloch on that one.

    I am pretty sure that steering is not out of phase. Hard to be certain looking at those pictures though

    i think out of phaze is a bit nit picking. the fire wall and dash flexes so much its not going to matter. For shafts and u joints id just go to the junk yard and cut some out of a japanese car with a chunk of the shaft so you can have the splines and weld them onto your shafts. oem quality for a great price.

    I like where this is headed, thanks for the responses. Hearing a few different ideas and opinions is helpful. It's definitely on the "to do" list but I'm saving it for a winter project. I want to drive it before the weather turns.

    I went and scoped things out at the local wrecking yard. This was my favorite idea, lots of options I can see, touch and measure...Thanks for the tip!

    Here's my haul...$90 bucks out the door. I only bought the steering column for the splines. Thanks again for the feedback everyone.
