Well, it's done. June 2011: I drove back home 700 km with my first CJ5; many problems were to solve.

Fuel tank, electric wiring, etc... From July 2011 to July 2012 my Jeep stayed at a mother's specialist shop, who took time to repair all what he found. He was working at a pro shop for WWII Jeep, so easy to get parts, and many parts of the CJ5 are the same as for a Willys of 1950.
    Good chance.

There was still some unsolved problems. I spent some time cleaning and repairing my nice Meyer hard-top with doors, for use in winter.
So I slowly understood that to have a CJ5 is a game of patience.

June 2013, problem with the gearbox. Again a specialist shop, the one working on old WWI cars, all sorts of military vehicles, not far from my place too. I got it back in september 2013.

And now, after 3 years, I found the way to have the fuel gauge working. And repaired the fuel tank.
So : all is working well!

What to do next? I have a brown fabric top to install, make a rear seat, maybe some painting. Also the windshield glass to change, but I can manage.

So : I am happy, I succeeded in having a true CJ5 in good condition. I thanks all gods for this, Wattor, the god of electricity and power, Transor, god of transmissions, gearboxes, etc... and I thank you, all of you who helped me in this complex quest of happiness, morover in France, with lack of spare parts.

1 - the hard top is now hanging, ready for summer.

You said "fuel gauge"? This is the problem of logic, all connexions must be perfect. Electricity on a car is the most complex because all must be checked.
What I understood is that a good pro can do it easily. Check the value of the fuel gauge first, 10 ohms full -72 empty, then the negative point (mass) must be as near as zero, etc...
The Jeep fuel gauge system is not of high quality! it should be better to make a new hole in the tank to put a real fuel sender of high quality, like on a boat.

The Jeep is in my country house, I am not all the time there, that's why it took time. I want now to check the starter engine, the part with electro-magnetic part which have teeth going in contact with the flywheel. It is not enough well working. Need some grease.
And good cleaning, maybe some painting, etc...
What is nice and that this Jeep will be still running in 10 years and more. Eternity car.

    Alan,

You must have a great set of boat fuel gauges and a good sending-unit as well. My boat has always been a 'long suggestion' to not run past 1/4 full without filling - even though it's likely at half-full. I could fill up (20gal tank / 50HP 4-stroke Merc) then run it all weekend fishing, and have it read half - then fill it, and only put in 7gal... so mine runs 'safely' un-calibrated (or wrong)...

That being said, the same is for my FIL's boat - 15 years newer - 40gal tank / 115 4-stroke Yamaha / 10HP 4-stroke Yamaha, his gauge runs about 10% off but 'safely un-calibrated' as well. His old boat was 25% or more off what we knew it to be - showed E when there was 50% or so in the tank.

I guess, being off and showing 'empty' before 'being' empty is better than the other way around and having to try to paddle.

The truth is that since many months I look for fuel gauge solutions, and the most good technical answers are for boats.
I didn't find answers for planes, but for boats there is a lot of solutions and prices.
Good solutions are expensive, cheap solutions are the same as for the Jeep.
You can have very expensive solutions...fluids questions : http://en.gilep-event.com/p5-liquid-fuel-distribution-equipment.php
