Hey yall! New to the forum and I'm looking at a 53 CJ3B and need some input. From what I can tell it's priced pretty fairly but figured I'd ask the experts before jumping on it! I plan on using it as a toy...and a little cruising around town. It's 6 hours away, But here is what I know from talking to the guy.
-Body has little to no rust. No rotted out floor pans or wheel wells.
    - 69'-79' Chevy 350. Holley Carb with headers. no smokes no leaks
-T-18 heavy duty transmission supposedly out of a heavy duty military truck
-he thinks it has 5.38 gears. Not sure what axles.
-racing bucket seats with 5 point harnesses
-dual gas tanks both leak free
    -all electrical works
-brakes upgraded to heavy duty hydraulic drum brakes
    -hydraulic clutch, good condition
    -fresh grease
    -4x4 and hubs work well
    -full roll cage
-comes with usuable soft top and doors
-tires are in fair condition, and come with an extra set
    -asking $2900

That's an amazing deal if it has a good title and that body has no cancer hidden under bondo. A junk 3b all rotted out brings about 1500 with a title so 2900 for a good one isn't bad at all, but as always, try to pay as little as possible and inspect it well for hidden repairs/problems.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it does have a clear title. I will definitely give it a thorough look over, but he claims the body is solid.

I would post pics but it says I can't post attachments

It's not you - nobody is allowed to upload pictures to the forum. There's no budget to purchase local storage for pictures, and anyway it's a security issue.

You can host them on another site, and link to them or hot link to embed them in your posts.

    Yep, you have pictures.
From experiance, you will also want an overdrive, it makes the Jeep much more driveable.

Diamond plate can hide problems. Take a good look at the tub corners.

Deduct $500 for the stripe. No way you could put that together for 2900 if the tub is even in sort of good condition and the engine/trans/transfercase are good. Curious what axles/brakes are under it.

Oh, and it won't be any fun. Wow, another member for the Team UglyR)

That type of rig, I would be asking myself how hard it has been hammered by guys playing Rat Patrol. Look hard beyond the paint.

Oh believe me..first thing to happen is that stripe is coming off, as long as everything is mechanically sound! But I'm definitely curious about the axles. My uncle is concerned the 350 is too much for this drivetrain. All I know about the brakes is he says they are hydro and "heavy duty" and stop real well.

Why do you say it won't be any fun?

Just a little sarcasmR) Been running sbc's in my 3B since about 1973. It's about get version number 4. Without knowing what axles, it's hard to say if there may be a problem. Either the D18 or D20 can take the power and if you have a light right foot, even the D25 can last for awhile-just don't put a locker in it and drive in low range like there's a can of tannerite under the gas pedal. That said, if you try hard enough, there isn't a thing on earth you can't break.

It helps if you fill in your profile so that any local members may be able to help. I always tell people that I am always available to look at something before you buy it. Or you can pay me a lot of money to fix it after you buy it.
