Considering how little room I have for storing a 16' trl.. Is there any smaller options out there? My 2a has a cage and 33s..so it's a few pounds heavier than stock..

a 2a is around 11ft bumper to bumper, so you dont need a 16ft. i'd put a tow bar on the bumper and flat tow it

what are you pulling it with?
I would always lean towards renting a trailer with surge brakes unless it exceeds the GCVW

and please don't say your focus :D

It has a towbar already.. Just feel uncomfortable about it.. Plus I wheel 1-3 hours from home w/interstate being the main roads traveled. I'm looking to buy a tow rig/dd that can accommodate whichever way I go.. I was thinking. GC or Dakota

I would lean towards renting a larger truck and trailer with surge brakes \
I have always flat towed mine behind a fullsize pickup, my ranger can technically flat tow my jeep as it's GCVW is 7000 lbs but the jeep must be bare, no cab, no fuel, windshield down, etc. to keep a low frontal area and 2700lbs. the ranger at 3800lbs would need to have nothing in it but the driver, some gas, a sand bag over the rear axle and a smooth dry straight road.

I have started towing it in there daily dress, but the jeep had the truck by the tail and wanted to lead.

If room to store is the issue, you could always store it on the trailer at home, or use a tow dolly which would'nt hurt the jeep at all. Not that its relavant, but where abouts in the country are you located? I have a similar problem here in New Jersey, too far to drive at 45mph. I'm putting a tow bar on mine and pulling it with a 99 2500 pickup, should be plenty of power.

Just a sidebar here on towing.............take a look at my CJ's tow bar...........I installed a surge brake hitch on the tow bar years ago when I was hunting all over the Western US. Worked real well........takes a special check valve that I sourced from the Mica Off-road people which allows the rear brakes only to be operated from a remote location IE, the tow hitch!............it also allows for the standard system to be in place. Of course the tow bar stayed on all the time and had a flex line from the bar to the front frame. I did a few of these back in the day for my buds........some State laws prohibit the use of surge brakes........saying that on a towed vehicle must have a means of application in the drivers compartment..........most CHP that I knew could never figure out the plumbing anyway........I never had a problem[IMG]

    I'm in southern Indiana.

i have always driven my jeeps to the trailhead, but the age of the Willys and my back say I need to do something different. I'm thinking if I did get a small trailer, I'm almost sure I'd find dozens of uses for it, so spending the money on one isn't a problem really.. I just don't think I need a 16'... I thought even about building one, I'm pretty good and fab work.

I have trailed a few vehicles, used a tow dolly but I had the most pleasant experience flat towing my M38 on 35's with a tow bar 900 miles. I was worried about, it was stressful except for the actual act of towing, it went smooth and I would do it again.

Flat tow using a small trailer. That looks like the safest way to me.

I tow mine on a 12' landscape type, lets me throw extra gear on the floor of the trailer and not worry 'bout anything falling off. [IMG]
Shorter trailer also makes it easier to store.

Last time I was at the U-Haul yard, I looked at their open trailers. They look very sturdy. It looked to me like you could drive a CJ right up into one. That would work fine in place of their heavy and rules-encumbered car haulers. Any problem with that approach, esp. for a flatty?

The downside of renting a trailer is having the time to pick it up and return it.. :(
