Left me stranded.......again

Books don't show a return line. None of mine with either the flathead or Fhead engines had return lines to the tank. CJ's, pickup, or wagon either.

 

AFAIK no return line was used until the early-mid '70s.

In fact, makes it the first suspect.

 

Any way to clean out that carb without taking it apart? I don't even know if I can get gaskets for a solex.......

 

Question: Did you get just a fuel pump, or one of the double chamber jobs that also has a vacuum pump in it.
If so, did you maybe hook up the wrong end of the pump to the fuel?
That vacuum pump will push about 25 psi, which will definitely overcome the float in the carb.

Good thought! Have you checked the fuel pressure yet?

"Any way to clean out that carb without taking it apart?" No. Taking the top off the Carter is simple, and you can inspect and clean the bowl and float valve.

 

No, I just have a regular fuel pump for use without the vacuum wipers. The fuel pressure is good, I just found a lot of sediment in the fuel pump screen. *Sigh* I guess I'll have to tear down the Solex and clean it- that's what I was afraid of.....

I thought you just put a newly rebuilt Carter on it. Why not just pop the top on that first, and take a peek?

 

Well, I've got that Carter and a Solex. I've got the solex on there right now cause it seems to run a little better than the carter (and its shinier!) Yeah, that's not a bad idea, Pete, I'll see if I can get that carter cleaned out. I'm just ready to get this thing on the road again. I guess I've been lucky, out of the 50+ vehicles that I've owned I've never really had this much problem with trash in the gas........but then again I've ALWAYS ran an inline filter.....Don't know why I didn't put one on this one........

 

Here's something to think about as well. Sounds like you are only catching the trash as it "rolls down the hill". What kind of gas tank are you using? Is it original? Was it cleaned? When I say that I mean, did you use a gas tank wash and seal it? The original tanks have a slosh baffle and there is no way to tell what is behind it. You could have the loch ness monster behind it and not know it. Are you using a new tank? If so, I would seal it too. Even those new tanks are bare metal and sit around for a while. We got a brand new steel tank for a GPW and took a flashlight to the inside; it was completely rusted up. It only takes a grain of sand sized piece of trash to mess up a carb.

Also, I bought a new plastic tank for my CJ5 and after a while it did the same thing. It turns out, when they make those tanks, they "clam shell" seal the 2 halves together and THEN drill the holes. My gas tank was full of plastic shavings. I ended up soldering up the pin holes in my original steel tank, and using that multi-step gas tank kit from POR.

Also, how much gas is in your tank when it happens? I've seen that happen before on other's jeeps when they get low on gas because the trash settles and the fuel pump tube picks it up.

You could put 10 filters on your fuel lines and it would run for a while, but eventually, they will clog up and you will be sitting at that red light again if you don't fix what is causing the trash in your carb in the first place.
