    Good to hear!

How did you go about setting the timing for the cam break in?

I have a CA engine and it runs at 0*. I made a couple of marks and remembered where the rotor sat. Fired right up.

Is a ballast resistor used with your electronic distributor?

HEI distributors need a full 12 volts so the ballast resistor is not used.

That sounds really nice, what muffler are you running?

Way to go Rocky! Nice! I like the way Flowmaster 50's sound. I have a 40 on my truck...too loud and way too much resonation. Yours sounds good!

Drove up to OKC today for a VA appt, ending mileage 400. Ran the trip back in DD to get the RPMs up. I stayed below 3k until 300 miles. Now will run hwy speeds from 3k-4k and greater than 4k is OK. That's getting up to 75+ mph so not a lot of places to do so. I'll find a few I'm sure. Break in will be complete this weekend and I can go sling some sand (sand quarry 1/4 mi down the road). I found the exhaust leak at the rear of the passenger side flange. Will probably live with it till after I get the tiller rebuilt.

Break in is over, old oil out, 5 qts of Valvoline VR-1 in and ready to go wheelin'. Still have some carb issues, probably accellerator plunger and I need to set the float better. I've had the engine up to ~4300 RPM and it runs strong all the way. Comp Cams says 5K redline. I doubt it will ever see it, not under power anyway. I can't wait to FI it. There is definitely room for more fuel.

Well I've had fun doing it. I hope all enjoyed the adventure. It's always nice to do a show n tell for a group of like minded, intelligent, and courteous individuals such as you all.

What an insightful experience! Thanks for all the effort you put into this build thread. I still have a 231 engine that needs a rebuild if I ever get around to it. I'll definitely save your thread for future reference.
    Thanks Rocky

UPDATE: One final step I failed to mention. After break in retorque the heads. I did so today. There was no discernable movement of the bolts but its nice to check. I also pulled the air horn on the 2g to set float level and check the accelerator circuit. This is what I found.

I guess I'll take the hit, but I am always very careful with carb rebuilds and double check everything as I go. Can't imagine how this happened. Have to wait on arrival of a new one. Screwed this weekend's planned wheelin' trip.

I wonder how long it would have taken me to find that. Weeks of frustration...and blame.

Way back on page 10, post 91, you mentioned torquing the crank damper bolt to 140lbs. Does it take a lot of effort to get it there? I just did mine last night with a 3/8 torque wrench and it seemed way too easy.
