Spare Tire Carrier Parts

I just picked up a nearly complete spare tire/gas can carrier today for my Jeepster. The only thing it seems to be missing is a J-shaped bracket that holds the top of the can to the frame of the carrier with a carriage bolt and wing nut. Anybody know where I might be able to find one of these. I'm sure fabbing one up would not be too difficult, but I'd like to find the original equipment or a repop if able. Anybody know where I can get such an item?

 

Got a picture? Sounds like it may be a Kayline or ???

I was told that the bottom lip of the can goes in the U-shaped channel at the bottom of pic 2. The curved part of the missing J-shaped bracket in question goes under the middle bar in the can handle (like a hook) and the flat part goes over the bar closest to the carrier. A carriage bolt is inserted upward through the hole at the top of the can bracket, then through a hole in the J-bracket and secured with a wingnut. Does that sound about right? I think the two big washers in the second pic are spacers, but not sure where they go.

 

I'll have a look though some of my manuals and catalogs. Doesn't look like a Kayline or a Whitco though. You may be doing some fabricating . Maybe someone else will recognize it.

I will post pics when I'm able to get to that part of the project. Right now I'm dealing with floor boards that are a lot less solid than I originally thought. They will have to be replaced eventually, but right now it looks like Rust Encapsulator for the rust and something else to cover the holes in the footwells. Looks like the front of the hardtop might have a few hidden issues as well. A little bummed, but now I have an excuse to buy the welder I've been wanting for a while now.

 

I thought that was the Kayline ?

I'll look at mine. I think its the same carrier. Do you need a picture of the braket to fabricate from?

 

Looks like a Kayline for a CJ to me. Using those brackets would make that carrier open in an upward motion and close on you when you are not expecting

 

Doubtful it's a Kayline
All my Kayline catalogs show the Jeepster tire and can positions opposite of this carrier.
Kayline I believe always used basket type can carriers and square tubing/angle iron.
I don't recall round tubing at all.
Maybe it's a real early model.........

 

I just reviewed all the Kayline installation sheets for all their products.
The Kayline Jeepster TCC looks now where near that unit, FYI.

Whatever it is, it does not inspire a lot of confidence. I would not use it with a larger-than-stock tire. With a big tire, I'd expect it to tear out the body where it mounts to the sheet metal.

How do you know it's for Jeepsters? Anything more than the seller's claim?

 

All I can tell you is that the brackets conform to the body lines of the Jeepster. He said it came from a Jeepster he parted and I picked up a rear bumper w/brackets and some visors for a Jeepster in the same deal. I also exchanged emails with another forum member who had a similar carrier that he shortened and reinforced at the attachment points. It does have a pretty long moment arm for the tire. Some additional support would be a good idea.
