    I'm joining the "Quitters Club".

I've decided to sell and replace my CJ5 that I have been using for a DD for 3 years for something a little bit more practical. I decided on a TJ I'm pretty sure I want to go with a 4 cylinder, five speed mostly because of the axle gearing and the fuel economy thing. The TJ's are pretty new to me, are there any problems I should look for when buying used; oil leaks, common rot areas, anything else on these Jeep that are prone to problems?

You won't likely get any better mileage with a 4cyl.

Most likely not, but I want a manual and I really do not care for the 3.07 gears they put behind the inline six.

Then get 3.73's. One of my main "had to haves" when I was looking was a Dana 44 rear and 3.73's

Definately get the 6. It has a lot more pep than the 4 cyl. And you will get virtually the same gas milage.

it's also a price issue. The inline sixes around here usally go for about two grand more than their inline four counter parts. Beside neither will be close to what my CJ5 was power wise.

I was quite happy with the 4cyl. in my TJ.

    Mine was an early '97 model, 2.5 w/ 5spd.

Off-road I didn't have any issues vs. the I6, in fact I preferred it. It just wasn't as heavy feeling, felt much more nimble. Around town and whatnot it did fine even with 31" tires. I did put a MOPAR cam in it, 4.0L TB and Borla exhaust, that helped the top-end a bit.

Overall it was a great Jeep, I was quite happy with it as long as I owned it.

Common rot areas are the fender tops and the frame. The frame rots where mud lays in it, in the back by the coils and where the skid plate bolts on.

I had a 4 cyl with 4.10's and a 6 with 3.07's, hated those gears. Crawling around trails the 4 cyl had better mileage, highway was similar. 4 cylinders are a harder sell, so they are quite a bit cheaper here too.

I test a drove a 4 cylinder the other day it was decent, not a rocket, but it will work okay. Thanks for the heads up on the frame, I knew to check around the control arms but I didn't know about where the skid plate bolts on.I'll check that area closer fom now on.
