if you had a jeepster or wagon, cool swap. early 5 not so much. would go :v6: or iron duke 4 banger.

a poncho slant four could be an interesting swap as well. it's half a 389.

I have to agree that this is another "just because you have it" situation. If it is already set up for a small block Chevy, that will by far be the cheapest install- and IMO, the best install. Another 305 wouldn't be a bad choice. With the right cam and the long stroke, should make very good Jeep power, especially if you can find a TBI version. These should even be cheaper than a 350.

Just another potential issue with the slant 6... the oil pan sump might need to be moved/pan modified... I can't remember if they are front or rear sump.

I'm with the SBC crowd; you already have a head start on it.

Even with 3 225s in my shop, if I could find a 4.3 like that around here, I would jump on it. In the end, I think it would be less work and probably less $ to put it in even with a 'free' engine. All that little stuff to make something fit really adds up.

I completely agree, I think a 4.3ltr is an ideal swap. Especially when you consider the remainder of your drivetrain options.

In that case, I'll give the guy with the 4.3L the call. I suppose I can hook up the TBI without too much difficulty.

be very specific when discussing a 3.8l engine, because there are several very different engines at 3.8l ;)
i would go 4.3 if you need tbi, adjusting a tbi to the lower displacement might not be fun making the computer happy,
i don't know if the 229 semi odd hei reluctor wheel can be used with the tbi distributor. you might need to convert the 4 pin hei distributor to hold the 7 pin module as well as disable the mechanical and vac advance

but the non vortec tbi manifold should fit the Chevy 229. and my 200 manifolds fit after one bend was removed.
Here are some pics, everything but the motor mounts worked out well, I can't take fresh pics because it's not with me this semester.
the biggest difference a 4.3 has is the lack of a fuel pump, and a smaller tbi distributor,

    X2.
Also make sure that if you are looking at a 4.3 make sure it is a 4.3 and not a Semi even fire 229. DAHIK

I'm an idiot. Must have been too late at night when I was typing that. The guy has a 4.3L 262 TBI, not a 3.8 229.
