I'm sorry men, but I gave a very detailed response and explanation about how camshafts are ground, but it was censored.

Just about all the options discussed to date are really just history that has been with us ever since Vic Hickey did his first flathead jeep performance upgrades. Lots of good topics out there to read and choose from:

There was a very good Hickey article in the Jan 1953 Hot Rod Mag. Covered the hop up of a L134.
Hickey Hi-Comp head, Burn's dual carb man. w/pair 52 Ford six glass bowl Holleys, Potvin cam, valve & spring work and IGW-4189 distributor.

Cam profile was mentioned above as well as a lack of info on stock cam profile. The stock valve timing is in SM-1046 page pages 69 and 73. Hickey's valve timing numbers were: Intake: open 18 deg BTC, close 58 deg after BC. Exhaust: opens 56 deg BBC, closes 20 Deg ATC. He used .320 lift for both int & exh.

While thinking more power with not a lot of money or changes think about that nasty ethanol loaded gas. Lower thermal efficiency, lower mileage, high price. Try mixing your fuel 60 (Mogas ethanol) x 40 (Avgas 100LL). This gives you back the lead and leaves you around 90 Oct. This allows you to move basic ign timing up a few more degrees.

    Made some improvements:

Advanced the timeing to about 12 btdc. may go a little more yet
put synthetic oil in the transfer case
replaced the fan blade, with a 2 blade unit with less pitch.
took out the 68 lb military radio in the back, no spare tire, no gas in the spare.

The combination of these has produced a noticable difference. goes up and down hills ok now. I would say 10 to 15 percent difference.

    Thanks for the help

I've never tried having the timing that advanced. Did it make it run any warmer, or hard to turn over when starting?

cant say about running warmer. our temps here in SC are in the 50's day, 20's nite. Jeep never really gets all that warm on my commute (6 miles).

I will say this, the engine loves that setting. Starts good, runs good. Burning premium however.

I have become a fan of that synthetic gear oil. The transfer case whine is down to about a third of what it was.

you still at the 12* timing?

What fan did you go with? Part or model #, please.

    thanks-

Pull 50 or so over the hills- 50 is the fastest I want to go in an A1 any faster and i'd have to clean my pants out.

I am the one who put the turbo on. It runs fine, no knocks, drove it a week ago. Didn't gain astronomical amounts however. Drop me a line if you have specific questions. Don't be too be too discouraged by the gloom and doom on the threads but don't let visions of unicorns and 10sec quarter mile times get in there either.
