I can drive around town all day at 35-40 and no problems

Take it up to 60 plus and the temp gauge slowly climbs all the way to 210 ish

New thermostat, new Stewart Warner electric gauge
    Where do I begin?

In addition to checking to make sure the cooling system is functioning, I suggest making sure your dwell and timing are all good, as my Jeep would run hot when the timing got off. Maybe make sure your vacume advance is functioning at the higher RPMs. Good Luck.

Well I have been playing with the timing as I just installed a pertronix and had to pull the distributor. I do that tomorrow and see what happensthanks

Radiator hoses still firm and not collapsing at higher RPM?

Radiator hoses are new and not collapsing

    Thanks

How new is the radiator? 3 core?

The radiator is used and I dont know much about it.

I believe its a two core but I will double check that

I guess I could get it hot and feel around it for cold spots

    Pat,

Are you running a fan shroud?

No Im not...think that would cause overheating at higher rpm's?

Shroud is usually needed for air flow at lower speeds. If it's good at low speed and not high, I would lean toward overall cooling capasity. Good flow at low speed, just not enough surface (or the engine is heating more due to timing) at high speed.

ok im going to start with timing and will try to report back

Had one that did what yours is doing, my radiator was partially clogged. Had it redone at a radiator shop and it cured the problem.

    Update time

I started by playing with timing which didn't help but did solve my slight ping:)

I then flushed the radiator with some stuff we have at work which didn't do anything but get my driveway wet

I then pulled the thermostat housing off to check the t stat and it was installed properly

I then went to remove the brand new electric water gauge

What I found was the back of the gauge was very loose and had seperated from the rest of the gauge!!!!

So after all this I think the gauge may have been the problem

I am going to get the radiator flushed because there was some junk in there and I will install a new 180 degree thermostat.

I also going to install a new autometer mechanical gauge

I must admit I think I know why the gauge failed the way it did....when I installed my gm tilt column I had to open up the bottom of the dash and it's kinda floppy at the bottom

I am thinking the vibration shook the poor gauge apart. So I will be stiffening up the dash before too long:)

I will do my best to report back

    Ok update time

I replaced the thermostat and installed a new mechanical gauge

Same radiator and running straight water

It runs 180 ish all day long but I took the same path as before and the gauge goes up to 200 after going 60plus for a couple minutes tops

It never goes above 200 and then drops once I slow down

    Normal?
    Is 200 too high?

    Sounds about right to me...

no doubt the radiator. have a shop take off the top and bottom reservoirs and rod and boil out the core if it can be saved, if not they can put in a fresh 2 or 3 row. problem solved.

I don't know what kind of fan your running. i used to have a five blade steel fan with fixed blades on mine, when i would get out on the highway doing over 60, when the temp. was in the mid 90's mine would run hot and sometimes spit out the overflow. i put on an aluminum flex fan and the problem went away. something about the fan spinning fast enough to block airflow at speed.

Good point...I have a standard five blade fan on mine

I will look into that thanks

What temp t-stat are you running and have you considered a cooler one if possible?
