Hardtop Questions

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by technologyteacher, May 15, 2011.

  1. I went on a small trip last weekend and this followed me home. I have a couple questions about it.

First, does anyone have an idea of the brand of the top?

Second, does anyone know what the two clear lights are for on the rear of the top in each side of the rear hatch.

I am starting to strip it down and repair a small amount of rust through.

    Thanks for the help.

More pics would be helpful - leading edge and a better view of a door.

I'd guess it's an older Meyer Deluxe cab. The lights were applied by the PO, and did not come with the top. Backup lights, I presume.

Odd. The extra window in the back came with the Deluxe cab, IIRC, and may have been added. Or it has a standard right side and Deluxe left side.

The one "extra" window in the rear seems odd to me. I've only seen these tops with either no "extra" windows or both, one on each side of the lift gate. Never saw one with only one window like this top has. Interesting.

I agree its a Meyers top .1974 body and earlier . don't know why it would have too different sides . like timgr said maybe PO work. did you get all the goodies with top. the two door stop channels left and right (for door upper seals) . upper and lower hinges . one thing that's always missing - filler strip for gas tank indent - sometimes left on jeep . and over looked . good top

  7. Got hinges both upper and lower, and an extra windshield frame with the upper hinges still attached.

How difficult would it be to cut a window in the other side? I'm sure a good glass company could use the other glass as a pattern.

What does the filler strip for the gas tank indent for and is it necessary for the top?

Pic below. It closes the gap between the top and the indentation for the gas filler neck. Not required, but would make things tighter.

I agree, by the look of it and the doors, it's Meyer top, or similar branded top. They were called a couple of different names. I wouls say that one side was replaced at one point in time, hence the single rear side lite.

the two clear or white lights were probably owner add-ons.

It is a Myers top you can see a few on here. It is recommended you brace bottom of the inside with wood before putting it on. These things are really flimsy compared to a fiberglass top until they are on the jeep. My only guess for the extra window and those lights is that it was on a mail jeep. Depending on the year of your jeep and the year of the top you may need to trim the front overhang edge to make it work with your windshield.

Cool, you got the doors also. Yes it is a Myers the doors are a dead giveaway. Never mind the windshield thing guess you are just swapping that one in.

Or did it maybe come off an old DJ model with right hand driver seat in it? that window would give you good vision over your shoulder to check on coming traffic.
