Steering effort with 10.5 in wide tires?

    Anyone have 10.5in wide tires with manual steering. How hard is it turn the wheels from a dead stop. i got 8in wide tires now and it is difficult but not outrageus. Just wanting to see what you guys thought before i buy new tires.

    11.50s with manual steering - not objectionable. Aired down with the powrlok up front...yea...that got a bit tough...

    I have 31X10.5 's, with manual steering, and it's not too bad.

    12" here, yes it is tough, but with slight roll it is not to bad. The overall turning radius is bad, due to the tires rubbing the springs, however I have not come across a need to turn it completly. The small wheel base of the CJ5, makes it a little easier for turns. Dead-stop, bad, Roll - not so bad. <1 mph, decent enough.

    i have 12.5's with power steering and a 10.5 or 11" grant wheel. at a dead stop its very difficult, if am moving at all i have zero problems with it

    Don't ask how I know but did you check oil in the steering box?

    mine uses lithium grease, i just took it apart last weekend and adjusted it so i know its ok.
    any one having problems with steering compents due to the extra force?

    none so far, but i have a rack n pinion steering setup that was already installed, not sure if this would have made a difference or not
     
  9. I have 12.5" BFG MT and power steering. No problems at all, even standing still. The lugs on the tires hit the spring wrap at full lock, but not by much.

    I've got 12 1/2" Super Swamper TSL's with manual steering and have no trouble turning them at all, although I do get tire rub when turning all the way to the left. I've also got manual brakes and have often wondered what the hub-bub was about swapping in power steering and power brakes. I don't have any trouble turning or stopping.

    '74 = 11" Brakes. Drive a 60's era with 9" brakes some time and you'll understand the difference...

    i hear that 11" brakes in the front was the best thing i ever did, now just gotta install the back ones
     
  13. 11" brakes are fine and a great improvement. But on my 10", the Jeep stops just fine. Might put a set of drilled drums on, but that's it.

    I have 33x12.5" TSL's on 8 inch 2" backspaced wheels, with 6-8lbs of pressure offroad it would wear you out fast, on the road with 20lbs or so it wasn't bad at all, once you got rolling.
    I now have power steering and can turn 'em with one hand sitting in the driveway.

    Also, why upgrade to 11" drums when it's just as easy to do disc brakes up front?

    I wouldn't agree that discs are as easy as 11" kits...11" drums are truly bolt on, and available in kit form for those of us w/o good parts yards available to scrounge up the necessary parts.

    I went to local 4x4 shop, bought a complete 1979 CJ dana 30 for $75, took it home and swapped from the knuckles out, took 2 hours or so. I run the original proportioning valve and an '88 YJ master cylinder (freebie). The '79 also had drive flanges, which I carry in case I blow a hub, a little bonus!
    Don't get much cheaper or more bolt on than that, and I can stop now after going thru the mud and water.

    See...you lost me at "hello"...;) There's just no way to run out and get a '79 D30 on a moment's notice around here...

    Ah..I also forgot we were talking a D30 front as opposed to the D27 (serves me right for not looking at what forum we're in... :rofl: )
