rear hubs

    Was suprised to see that the rear hubs have key way and not splined .How strong is this. 1955 m38a1

    depends on how you use the skinny pedel and how much is under the hood, and how big your tires are. If you are still running the 4 banger I doubt if you will ever have a issue;) they are also tapered, so when that nut tightens down you get the idea..

    How tight should the nut be, I took the passenger side of by hand the other side had to put wrench on it

    right off hand i dont know. I am thinking in the 250 ft lb range, but dont quote me on that.

    FSM says 150ftlb then tighten until next notch lines up with the hole int he shaft.

    You are lucky! Never had a problem with 2-piece axles, as long as that nut is torqued right - even with a v-8 in front of it. It's when the nut is loose that you can strip out the keyway. Good you found that first!:D
