Anyone know the weight, more or less, of say, the F134 vs. the V6 vs. a small block ( dare I say it ? ) Chebby.

Buick v6 414lbs, small block Chevy 575lbs, Ford 302 windsor motor 460lbs, F134 motor is right at 470lbs (Jeep Bible). I threw the Ford motor in just for comparison!! :p

    Hope this helps!

Thanks. Did a little search after my post. Found the V6 and 134 but nothin else. Yet another reason to stick with the 6.

I hear where mb8265753 (Is that your phone number or something?) is coming from. I am also a Chrysler guy beyond the whole Jeep affliction. I have a few engines kicking around in the garage, and I can handle a 318 on my own, and also slide a 440 with a Torqueflite bolted to it around the bay. The extra F head I have is nearly immovable. I feel like I hurt myself just thinking about moving the thing.

The small block Chevy is always given a generic weight because there are so many variables its pitiful, I would guess that there can be 50-60lbs +/- over the 575lbs that is in my previous post. I do know that of the small block engines Chrysler, Ford and Chevy, the Chevy engine is the heaviest on average, and is actually bigger than a 351 Windsor or 318/340 Chrylser in physical size. It has to do with the casting technique GM uses on there engines. Now big blocks thats a totally different deal, I think Chryslers are far heavier on average than the other guys big blocks.

Granville King listed the Jeep 225 V6 at 380 which would be a 90lb savings over the F134 470 lbs. But then there are not many 60 year old engines, that haven't been started in many years and a cleaning of the points, spark plugs and gas down the carb. allows them to fire right up either. Those L head and F head engines just don't quit.

You guys got to remember back in those days if something failed or looked stressed there idea to fix it was to throw more iron at it, while this is what made American machinery 2nd to none in the world it was also a case of over kill alot of times.

a similar story is why i dont believe the weight of the f-head. my buddy had an AMC 4.2L I-6 on his engine stand while we were rebuilding it. a few weeks later he gets a 3B so we pull the motor and put the F head on the stand. come back after celebrating the engine pull and we noticed the stand. the motor had BENT IT! we had to use a 4x4 to brace the motor from falling on the floor. the next day we were going out to buy a much bigger stand. i know our old stand was a little small about 800lb limit but still it should not have bent.

Just try to move one around in your garage, without a hoist. It's that heavy. don't ask how I know. :(

If I recall, a early engine from an international scout could be used as an anchor for an aircraft carrier.

i know i put mine on a modified skateboard ( 2x12 with skateboard trucks to move it around. it accidentally went off the garage floor onto the driveway and proptly sank into the ground. i moved it to its present location and it wont move till i got an engine hoist.

I heard that the modern Ford 4 bangers, like in a 90's Ranger, is basically the same engine that was used in the Pinto's. If that is so, how about bolting one in a JEEP via the old Pinto adapter. You'd have a modern fuel inj. 4 cyl, maybe lighter than the old ones considering aluminum parts.
I don't why, I just always wanted to make this swap. My head must be messed up.
