Thule Trailer Pictures

I've had this great little trailer for about two years now, and thought I'd post some pics. It isn't nearly as cool or interesting as the old ones some members have, but it has been very functional, and works surprisingly well off road. It was made by Thule, and has a removable fiberglass lid. Here are some pics:







I had been looking for an old JEEP trailer for awhile, but just couldn't find anything that seemed to be adequate. Then one day I noticed this trailer at a local sporting goods store, and decided it was just the thing. I've been very happy with it; perhaps this will give somebody an idea they can use too.

 

I think I have seen those at Jax in Fort Collins before..

Where in western CO are you?

Whats the bed on the trailer made out of? Aluminum?

I have been wanting to build a small off road trailer that had a fold out camping platform.

Yes, that's where I got this one - at Jax in Ft. Collins. The body and sides are galvanized steel. The bed is steel too, but with a thick piece of heavy duty laminated plywood bolted on top of it; I'm not sure exactly how it was coated, but it seems weather proof. My concern when I bought it was that it would rust like crazy, but so far not a spot. It is bound to rust eventually though, and I'm planning to paint it the same color as my CJ-5 when it does.

I've taken it on some pretty steep and bumpy trails around Montrose, and in deep snow without any issues. I've not hit or scraped any rocks yet, but I'm always extra careful with it. It would require some mods if you wanted to do anything with big rocks (don't try the Rubicon with one!), but the ground clearance is respectable as-is. Would be fine for easy to moderate trail riding with the family, etc.

We had a great time with it last December. Waited until then (poor planning) to get a firewood permit from the BLM and went up into the moutains to cut the wood. The trailer managed as well as my Wrangler in the deep snow. We hauled out four loads of firewood in it. Have also used it to haul camping gear, or on trips with the family to hold extra luggage, etc. But I think it would be too small to convert to a camper. Check the Thule site though - they used to make a bigger version of this same model.

I had been wanting to post some pictures of it, as it seems like an acceptable alternative to the hard-to-find classic trailers, and looks similar without the top.

 

Any idea on what to expect to pay for one? I did not know Thule made trailers!

 

The less expensive ones are called "EasyLine" trailers; they go for between about $350 - $650 depending on the size you buy. I think those are very similar to the one I have, and they pop up on e-bay or other places on the web. The model I have seems to be the "deluxe" version, and goes for more like $850 to $1150 depending on where you look. I didn't like the price, but it is still a bit cheaper than some of those special purpose off-road trailers. I don't have a place to fabricate something like this, so I decided it was worth the $$$ to me.

Since I started this post I've noticed that these are not exactly plentiful; I also read an article somewhere that suggested Thule may be pulling out of the trailer business in N. America. Anyway, I hope some of this info will still be useful to someone.

 

Sweet little trailer. I've been contemplating building a trailer out of two body tubs. It would be nice to have the extra capacity.

 

I'm looking for a trailer for our scoutmaster. His got destroyed when his house burned down. Did that one come with the cap or was that a separate purchase?

 

Mine came with the cap, but I think they can be purchased separately - or at least it used to be that way.

 

Do you have any memory of where ther cover came from?

 

Sure, I bought the trailer and cover as one unit. It used to be possible to buy these things seperately too. There were several add-ons that were shown on the Thule web site, like mesh sides, tall sides, tarps, spare tire carriers, etc. I don't know if those can still be bought new or not, but that's how it was when I got my trailer.

 

Did you change anything on it like the fender wells, ect?

 

A friend of mine lost an antique Sears Trailer that looked a lot like your Thule. I just got through searching through about 200 web sites on a search for "Thule". Here are the results:

No. I've kept it stock, as it seemed okay that way for my purposes. Someday, though, I would like to do a few things to it. I think they are simple enough that modification would not be too hard.

 

I emailed Thule and they are not making them anymore for the US market. Anyone have any other ideas for another company or something similar.

 

These trailers are marketed by Thule but manufactured by Brenderup Trailers. There is a distributor in Midland, TX. Google "Brenderup Midland, TX".

The Uk site shows all the different sizes and accessories. I have a 1205S with the top and side extensions when I need the larger trailer.
