renegade 1 spare tire carrier

Just purchased a Whitco swing away spare tire carrier. It is something I've been looking for, for quite some time, to complete the restoration of my Renegade 1 project. So here's the question to all you Renegade 1 owners who have the swing away carrier. There is a short hook like piece welded to the top bar about 9" from the hinged side of the carrier. I believe that some kind of chain hooks to it to keep the carrier from swinging to far when it's opened. Does anyone know what the other end of the chain attaches to. How long and what kind it is. That's assuming that thats what the hook is for to begin with.

    Rossboss,

Are you saying that the Whitco carrier is an exact replacement for Jeep part # SE-2073-200 Kit , spare carrier, swing out ?
If so where does one find a Whitco carrier ?
The parts catalog makes no mention of any other spare carrier details except that it is unique to the Renegade I.
From my viewpoint this carrier is perhaps the single most important feature identifiing Renegade I vs Renegade II.

The Renegade 1 has a tailgate and the Renegade 2 does not. I believe that's why the swing away tire carrier, though I don't know why it was chosen over the side tire carrier. The Whitco swing away has been a Jeep authorized add on since the mid 60's and remained a Jeep authorized add on to the mid 70's. The 70 Renegade is the only year that it was standard equipment for a CJ5. They're not the easiest thing to find. it took me almost two years of looking around.

Straight supports by the tire mount or inverted U? Just curious...

    Rossbos,
Thanks for getting me up to speed on the Whitco carriers.

    I think that's fairly obvious.
The original side carriers never had a good reputation due to limited strength and poor location.
According to the W1195 - R2 parts catalog the wheels used for Renegade I could be W/O part # 930047 which are the 5.5" wide x 15" Kelsey Hayes.
Yet I suspect most buyers preferred the W/O part # 994733 which are 8" wide x 15" Kelsey Hayes.
Simply stated the use of wide wheels mandated a new type of spare carrier.

The one I purchased has the three straight bars and cam from a 69 cj5. I believe the Renegadr 1 came with the inverted U, but I was happy just to find one so it will do.

My Ren 1 has straight bars. That pic of the inverted U doesn't look anything like my carrier.

I will check my 1970 tonight. I'm pretty sure it is a curved U style. Does your Ren1 have the pin striped seats?

I just checked my Tire Carrier. It does have the right angle rod that holds a chain and the chain bracket for the tailgate does have an extra termination hole to retain the chain when it is not on the tire carrier

I'm not finding any kind of an extra hole on the tail gate chain bracket to attatch an additional chain to on my jeep. Would it be possible for you to post a picture of it so I could take a look.

Just curious, does your spare tire carrier have the 3 verticle posts or does it have the inverted U pictured above?

    Phil,

Do you have any pictures of your swing away spare carrier? Thinking about something like that for my '66 project.

    Thanks,
    Keith
