T14 or T90?

    Last fall the input gear on my T14 broke 3 teeth. I wasn't being hard on it either, just normal driving. I want to get my Jeep back on the road as soon and as cheap as possible. I've got a T90 with a V6 adapter in unknown condition that I could go through and install. Which would be better, fix the T14 or go through the T90 and use it?

    i would fix the t14, rather the use an tranny of unknown condition.

    the t-90 doesnt have syncho in 1st. which means you have to come to a stop to shift from 2nd down to 1st which can be annoying. Also i believe they started puting the t-14 behind the v6s because the t-86 couldnt take much abuse. and the t-86 is just a modified t-90. I say stick with the t14. plus the t-90 is 5/8" shorter i think so it will take a little modifying of the lincages and crossmember

    I went through this and sourced a t-15 to throw in at the time and have a 420 for when that breaks. After becoming a pro at rebuilding the T-14 (out, rebuilt, and back in under 2 hours) it was most definitely time to move on.

    If money is an issue try and get the T-14 up and running, but try and remember to be on the lookout for something else too. It made my problems go away.

    I'm not a big fan of the T-14, but I would pick it over the T-90. The T-86 is basically a T-90 with a few refinements to make it quieter and shift easier. They are so similar that you can take the guts from a T-90 and put everything in a T-86 case. That said, I think Jeep went to the T-14 behind the V6 because the T-86 seemed very dated, even for the '60s.

    I would prefer the ratios of the T-86 or T-90 to the T-14, but the T-14 is a little larger and stronger, and is fully synchromesh. If you want to stay with a 3-speed, the T-15 is superior to all of these, but unfortunately was never offered with the V6. I know that the T-15 can be adapted to the V6, but I don't know the details.

    Hi Folks;
    Since I am new to this older jeep stuff, I have a question...How do I know which tranny I have in my 66. Is there a tag or something stamped on the tranny?
    I also found out that the transmission was replaced very shortly before the jeep's owner passed away and it was parked. So, whatever is in there, it is almost new

    V6 or 4-cylinder? All the F134 4-cylinder Jeeps used the T-90. A '66 V6 CJ-5 should have a T-86. It should have "T86" cast into the side of the case (I think) or there may be a tag attached to one of the top cover bolts, accessed by removing the floor plate.

    www.jeeptech.com has pages covering the factory transmissions, but it's down right now. When it's back up, go there and try
    Transmissions > Factory Options > T-86 to check on identifying features of the T-86.

    BTW it's preferred that you start a new thread to ask a new question. This is a "hijack" and considered bad form. The Admins will probably split this off into its own thread.

    I've got a T176 D300 combo that I want to eventually put in but right now work is slow so money's tight. I'll have to swap out the rear end to make that combo work too. I guess my cheapest & quickest option is to fix the T14.
