I've heard that wagoneer axles are a good canidate for a 44. What years are a close match for the width and drop

Wagoneers with front 44s are all 6 lug (6 on 5.5"), if you care. They are too wide for the front mounts, so you have to outboard them. Low (high numeric) axles are scarce; most are 3.31 or 3.07. A 2-door or 4-door narrow track Cherokee with a 258/T-18 could have optional 4.10s, but not many of them were made.

Dan (DanStew) had some on his CJ - maybe he'll post a pic or two.

aallison 74 cj6, 76 cj5. Has anyone seen my screwdriver?

Nohting is bolt in. I went trhough this last year and nothing will fit unless you outboard as Tim said, or cut down the axle. No fornt axle swap is easy. Lots of work. Lots of fabrication. Scouts are close for doners. Waggies are close. You can swap axle parts and wind up with a stock CJ bolt pattern. This has been covered many times. You can search and get some idea of what is needed to set a D44 in the front of a Jeep.

But why do you want bigger axles? What size tires, engine, use of jeep etc? Do you really need a biger axle?

If your just looking for the front, 74-77 are the years you want for small spindle and flattop knuckles, up to 79 has the pass drop. The small spindle allows the use of chevy bearings, ford seal, and 1/2 ton ford hubs to make the 5 x 5.5.

To match the rear believe it's 86 and newer waggys run the centered rear 44 to match the above 44.

A scout rear end is sort of close at ~3" narrower to match the front.

I would stay clear of a scout front, just a 30 with 44 center. They also have 0 caster and require a knuckle rotation to drive correctly. these also require outboardeding.

Yep, what was stated above, 44 front is lots-o-work, or you could buy a Rubicon with it's oddball 44.
