Zerk fitting - Am i installing my ujonits wrong??

    I noticed that when i pulled my driveshafts from the tranny and Tcase that not only one, but all 4 Ujoint zerk fittings have been bisted off my driveshafts. I do not know if i am going at too much of an angle, or if i installed them incorrectly. Are there caps available to install in the zirk fitting hole so that i can put the zirk on, add grease, then uncrew the zirk fitting and put a cap in , then install the driveshaft so that i do not have to break another fitting. Or should i just get the permenantly sealed ujoints???

    Dan I have seeen a gizmo just like you described several monthe back on the internet , but can't remember where it was.

    install the flush type that are lubed with a needle adapter
    most of the time they are used on close tolerance CV joints
    even if you install them incorrectly, you can still lube them with the needle adapter
    Lincoln makes them along with the needle adapter

    Must be the angle that's getting them. Are they installed pointing toward the driveshaft or away from it. That bit of difference might matter when the u-joint is at an extreme angle.

    i am not sure where they are pointing. Should they be pointed away from the driveshaft??

    They should point toward the driveshaft. That way they point away from the joint when it's angled. It's hard to grease them also if they don't point in the right direction.

    Here's a little trick that we have used on the race car's upper ball joints (The upper ball jopint would hit the front roll bar hoop around the top of the frame), first cut the top off a zerk, (we used a band saw and a pair of vise grips), and fill it with RTV, "We used GM's Red." after it dries replace the one you just pumped grease into.

    I had a willys pick up with a spring over once. it would shear the zerk off the t case end of the front shaft. i replaced that joint with the kind that has the fitting in one of the caps

    Spike TV has a show (I forget what it's called) where some dude makes all kinds of mods on his truck. I watched one episode re: driveshafts, and he mentioned that the zerk fittings on the u-joint must be oriented towards the driveshaft (I think) otherwise you won't be able to grease 'em. I remembered that because I had just installed one of mine in backwards, and I've been waiting for it to shear off at extreme articulation. Sounds like that might be what happened to you.     You also need to install the zerks so that they under compression when you are driving forward. If you don't then you can split the u-joint in two under load. it will break right at the zerk hole. :shock:
