    A rebuilt Rochester 2G :D

    Or rebuild yours.

  3. If your 2G isn't totally trashed, it can be rebuilt almost indefinitely. Stay away from auto parts remans. Usually, they are worse than what you exchange. They have a cast iron throtle plate that can be bored and rebushed if needed. The throtle shafts and butterflies are rediably obtainable. For the 1st time and if you really don't know the condition of it, I suggest to have it professionally rebuilt at a good carb shop. They also can tell you IF it's any good. Once you know it's good, it's easy to do yourself from there on.

As for options, the Motorcraft 6-289 and Holly 2300 Series 2 bbls are excellent. Holly's have the ability to be rejetted in any combination you want. Both carbs require an adaptor--cost about 17 bucks from Jeg's or Summit.

    carb replacement

My 2g has a striped screw holding the fuel bowl cover and the shafts have alot of slop. Float is a plastic job and bowl contains drain down the intake. Worst yet I've never been happy with any of my rebuid attempts(stock willys) to date. I ordered a reman. 2g ,160 bucks at Schucks. I would like to do something better but I guess it will have to do for now. I really want to get this fired up and dial in the other problems I know I'm going to find. If anybody knows of a higher quaility reman. , I'd like to here from you. I believe you get what you pay for and I'm willing to pay more for quaility.

motorcraft 6-289. You can get them from autozone for about 180.00. All my friends run them and ive had mine on for about a year and it works great offroad. You will need an adapter plate which will run you 40.00 or so..

I'm sure the 6-289 is just a 1.07 venturi Autolite/Motorcraft. If you live in the warmer states, you should be able to find one at your local pick-your-part. I'm running a 2V Motorcraft from a '79 360 Wagoneer on my truck, using an adapter from Summit.

Motorcraft jets are availalbe from Parker Carburetion.

This carb is often used to replace the 2V Carter BBD that comes stock on 258 I6 Jeeps. Search the net, and you'll find quite a few articles.

Based partly on Jim's suggestion I'm running the Motorcraft also. Works really good on this motor. However - I would advise against the autozone rebuild. I got one and let's just say the rebuild left a bit to be desired.

Were I to do it again, I'd do as Tim suggests and go the pick-a-part route. Grananda's galore with these things in the pic-a-parts near me. (Where are all these Granada's coming from? You don't see them on the streets much anymore yet everytime I go to the JY there seems to be at least 5 or 6 of them???)

Ive had no problems with the autozone rebuilds and if you do you can take them back and get another..My buddy runs one on his cj7 with a 360 motor and can stand it straight up and still be running fine .I know at least five more guys that run them and swear by them.

Hey your best bet might be to place an ad in the WTB section for a Rochester 2G. I just sold one cheap to a member here last week that I rebuilt myself. Ya never know who here's got one lying around. Good luck whichever route you decide.

I personally like the 2G. I've rebuilt mine twice now, replaceing the main body the last time, due to some wear in the accelerator pump bore. I replaced it only because I had a body in better shape. I've got three complete 2G's in the garage (sorry, I'm keeping them). My only complaint is mine still runs a bit rich (I live @ almost 7500 Ft) and I haven't been able to find smaller jets. I *think* I've got 51s in it, it's been a couple years since I had it apart. I don't mind it running a tad rich, because I rarely run the Jeep at lower altitudes, but quite often run up to 10k or higher.....

I have a 2g on one of my v6s. It also runs somewhat rich(I'm at 6-7000ft). I have a book about modifying Rochester carbs and in it, it says that the main jets are not the only jets involved in the flow of gas throughout the range. Now get this...you block off these other orifices and richen the mains to LEAN out the mixture from idle up to wot. Its supposed to work great, but I haven't personally tried it. If anyone is interested it this tech article, let me know and I'll try to get it to you.
