Thinking of buying 1970 CJ5 (Things to look for)

I've come across a 1970 CJ5 that seems to be in nice shape. It's got a fiberglass body, 350 Chevy mated to a 4 speed. It appears to have a body lift, and 31's or 33's on it. Is there anything I should look for when checking this jeep out? Is there anything with this year and model that is problematic? From what I understand it's from Florida and has very little rust, and the asking price is $1995.00. Thanks for any input.

  2. Seether: First of all, welcome to the Board. Drop by the Introduction section and tell us about yourself.

Price doesn't sound too bad, but there are a lot of things to look for. Some bad and some not so bad (but worth mentioning to seller to get price down :D )

I'm sure a lot of guys will chime in here, but if you can, get some digi pics of it. And remember, Florida has LOTS of water, which means rust. A lot of Florida guys here.

    Good Luck.

Fiberglass body shouldn't be rusted too badly. :D

  4. Glen: Oops, missed that. But there is still the frame.

    Hi Seether, welcome from Ohio.
1970 is the year some changes were made, but nothing particularly problematic IIRC. The Chevy and probably that 4-speed aren't original items, so it'll be hard to say what else to look for since there could have been um-teen changes made by a previous owner. Some pictures would help us help you alot, particularly of the engine, interior, dash, rear, and any under-side pics you can snap.

How does it drive? Does it steer ok? Smoke? And what do you plan on doing with it (on road or off)?
Oh, look for cracks in the frame towards the rear where the springs attach. HTH!
