dauntless v-6 easy question

I have a tender 58' cj5 that I haven't opened up yet. I also just aquired another cj5 with the v-6 that has the emblems on it, so maybe it's a stock set up. The v6 seems to run fine, but the rest of the jeep is almost completely gone and the t86 has been exposed for a while and is probably full of water. What will the v6 need to bolt to the decent t90 in the other Jeep?

thats a good question cause i'm in the same situation. i got the :v6: and a T90. i have an adapter to mate the tranny to the bell housing. i'm just wondering if i need to change the main tranny shaft or anything? i know what the novak conversions are but i don't know if i need one or not. my engine is a 70 or 71 and my tranny is from a 65 with the 4 banger. any help greatly appreciated.

Usually you use the long input shaft from a Utility truck/wagon with the V6 adapter. You might be able to use the adapter from the T-86 with the T-90 and a long input shaft, but I'm not sure. Maybe ... probably... You can't reuse any of the gears from the T-86 with the T-90 though. The frame towers from the V6 CJ should be useable too.

The T-86 is quite similar to the T-90, with only some design differences in the gears (helical sliding gears, helical mainshaft splines). You can use a T-86 case with T-90 gears, but you have to use all the T-90 gears - no mixing internals between the T-90 and T-86.

Dang, I just hauled 2 junk T-90's with long shafts to the scrap yard Monday. Sorry, can't help now. :D

Why don't you take the top off the T-86 and see what the inside looks like, before you worry too much? It may be full of water, then again it might not. ;D

As other's have said, to use a T-90, it will need an adapter plus a long input shaft. A T-90 from a Willys Wagon/Pickup that had a Super Hurricane 226 I-6 will already have this.

Herm the overdrive guy, www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com, can also sell you a rebuilt T86 for $350 if you have a core.

You should feel bad, underprivileged Jeepers here in the US could have used them.;)

one of my buddies got a SM425 from a wrecking yard that was half full of water. He cleaned it as best he could, spun the shafts to see if there was signs of bad bearings, filled it with 90wt and has been driving it for the last 3 years. Don't assume just 'cause it has water in it that it's shot.

I know it could be fine. I just like to know my options. I had a bad experience with an 51' chevy four speed that seemed fine , except a little pitting on the bearings, I still have a headache from the racket it made. If I put the windshield down I won't hear it.

:iagree: My SM465 had water in it and I didn't find any rust inside. Although I did do a complete rebuild.

Run it like you stole it. If it fails, it needed to be rebuilt anyway!

If you end up getting rid of your T-86, I'm looking for one and will gladly take it off your hands.:)
