Hi all, I am new to this site and am a proud owner of a 61 cj5. This is my first jeep and I am trying to get it trail ready ( it was in rough shape ,but still a steal for the $$$$$) and have a few questions for you veteran jeepers. Let me tell you what I am trying to do here, first I am in the process of converting my front drums to disc. I have read several tech articles about how to do this but one thing is not clear, where does the backing plate (I.E. caliper mount) bolt up? Does the spindle go in front of the plate or behind it? Second, is there a seal between the differential and the outside universal joint? When I was taking the hub assembly apart I found what looked and felt like half of an old rope or oakum seal.... it was total mush of course but undeniably resembled a seal of sorts(I.E. not rubber, possibly old school felt maybe?). If anybody can shed some light on my task that would be great as I would like to wheel my jeep on the fall tours. Thanks.

P.S here are some pics of my new toy, tell me what you think....

The actual seals to keep the lube in the pumpkin are in the pumpkin, you have to pull the carrier to replace them. There is separate lubricant, called "pudding" by really cool guys, in the bells for the u-joints, it & the dif lube aren't really supposed to mix & won't if the seals are good.

As for the felt seal it seems to be one of those "running changes" kinda things, some digrams show it and a "pilot" bushing, others don't. I don't hav'em in my '55, they don't show in my '59 parts manual but they're there big as life in the service manual.

From the diagram in the service manual it looks like you have the brass pilot bushings inserted into the outboard ends of the tube, the drawing seems to indicate the seal goes in behind this.

    Looks like fun to change.

    Have Fun,

    H.

The caliper mount bolts up the same place the old backing plates came off. Mine's a 27 but I think the swap is the same for the 25, so here's a couple of pics. Two show the caliper mount (if you can see the fuzzy one) and the other shows clocking (forward is to the right). Hope they help.:v6: View attachment 19304
