Carburator help please

    Just started my new engine. runs fast at idle with choke on. Take choke off and it slows down for a few seconds and then speeds up again. This occurs for a few cycles and then it dies. Won't start at all unless choke is on.

    Its a after market Weber DGEV 32/36 model.

    Ran great on the last engine no adjustments made since.

    Reset the mixture screw to 2 turns from seated. No real change.

    No back fire or anything but it is hard to start.

    Any ideas?

    had the same problem once with the same type of carb.float level was to low.hope this helps.

    After two more hours of :? no luck still. Gotta be the carburetor or fuel pump.

    Dang thing idles really fast with the choke on (choke on to me means more fuel less air makes it run) and (more air and less fuel makes it die)

    You can give it extra gas boost the rpms and then slowly turn choke off but you gotta keep giving it the gas or it dies. And the rpms are making me nervous with a brand new engine.

    I took it apart last night and the float was good. After thorough review I found that I forgot to plug the vaccum port that goes from the intake manifold to the windshield wipers. Couldn't see it since it's behind the distributor cap!:oops: Plugged the hole and it starts up and runs nice now. Just want to check/adjust the timing tonight, wire up the new pusher fan to augment the stock fan.
    Newest problem is the temp gauge reads Hot after a few minutes of running at idle in the garage. Premix antifreeze. Brand new thermostat 170 degree, Bypass hose installed, heater hose bypass installed. Water pump circulates and is not leaking (they work or they leak don't they?). Brand new rebuilt engine so the water jacket was thoroughly cleaned. Temp sending unit is off my old engine, maybe I need to replace it. Or faulty guage(but it reads cool when it's cool.:?
    I'm going to take another look at the CJ3B page on cooling tips but this one puzzles me. I'll see if the pusher fan helps tonight too.

    I would focus on the sending unit and gauge. The only other hot option is the Tstat not working (had a few 'new' ones that didn't work in a pan on the stove).

    If all you are doing is letting it sit at an idle, it may be normal. My F134 will heat up to about 200 before the tstat opens up if I start it cold and then let it idle to long without moving. After the tstat opens up the first time, it will stay in the 175-180 range. Changed out the tstat first time I noticed it, 2nd tstat did the exact same thing. I have had no problems with it under normal driving.
