Repositioning of the PTO Lever

I am installing an overdrive in the jeep, which means that I have to move the PTO lever back about six inches. It looks like this will place it right where my driver’s side seat bracket is. Has anyone run into this problem?

It's actually 7". I haven't mounted it up on Tonk yet but I'm considering fabbing a shift handle in the regular position with a push/pull linkage back to the PTO. May work, may not, theres not much clearance between the tub & the OD :(.

I'm in the same boat with this one. I have a Warn OD, and a Spicer rear PTO; I still need to order the adaptor from Herm to put them together. Assembly doesn't seem like it will be too hard, but the shift linkage has me troubled too. I really like the idea of using the original PTO hole, as it would keep me from needing to cut a new one. But space is so tight under there, I'm not sure if I can run any kind of linkage over the OD and adaptor back to the PTO unit's shift tower.

By the way, the PTO shift tower sticks up enough to be almost flush with the floor I think (I haven't actually mounted it yet since I don't have the adaptor, but when holding the unit under there behind the OD, it sure does come close to the floor pan). If one of you manages to make a push-pull setup work, please let me know, as I would like to try that too. Otherwise, I'm stuck with two holes in the floor, and probably a "custom" bent PTO shift handle.

As Nick pointed out the trouble is that unless it's in the forward most position the inboard mounting tab for the driver's seat occupies the space where the new hole would go  I figured that out just in time as I was about to graft in another PTO cutout from a donor tub into Tonk's floor.

I may try some sort of cable setup if there isn't enough room to run a shift rod.

I would trade a straight pto shift handle for a bent forward one.

When I had my PTO installed, I remember it being *very* close to the tub as well. Eventually I wanted to get the adapter and run both the PTO and OD...never thought about the seat bracket being a problem. Bummer. I'd also be very interested in what you guys come up with. I would really like to eventually have both. If I can't run both, I guess I'll go with the winch, since I already have that, but an OD has always been pretty high on my "I want" list.

What have other members done? I was thinking about fabricating a new seat mount, but if there was an easier solution, I would love to hear about it. This is what I have gotten so far from assessing my jeep. There is not any room between the tub and the overdrive to make any sort of extended linkage; further, it does not matter, the bolt hole for the current seat bracket would be right on top of the overdrive unit. I would love to hear from anyone who is currently running the PTO and overdrive setup.

My early CJ5 has both the overdrive and pto on it now (I got it that way). I doubt I'll have time to look at it during the week but this weekend I can take a look and try to get some pictures of the setup and where the pto shifters come through the floor. As I recall the top of the pto case is right at the level of the floor between the seats or possibly poking right through the floor a little bit.

Yeah, my PTO pokes through the floor about 1/2 inch or so.

Yes, please post some pics if you can...I'm very curious to see how it's set up.

I promised these pics of the pto a few weeks ago but I just got to it yesterday. I'm not sure exactly what you wanted pics of so I took a few from the top and the bottom. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks for posting those...I was actually thinking about this the other day and searched for this thread to see if it had any yet.
    Thanks!

Thats gotta be some kind of remote shifter, its coming through the floor in the wrong spot for a PTO hanging off the back of an OD. If you look carefully it looks like its monted to the floor with an L bracket & a push/pull rod going towards the back-

Its actually coming right thru the pto cover plate, but like Howard siad if it has an OD its about 4 inches to far forward. Its either a remote shifter or there really isn't a OD still under there.

I was looking at my floor, My seat "Leg" is all the way over tight to the tool box side. I'm going to use a 60/40 bench with a overdrive and a pto. The seats up in the air pretty good, I think I'll just bend my pto lever forward, so that when the pto is in, its almost level with the floor. I think this should work. The handle should stick out about 3-4" from edge of the seat.
It's going to be a while tell the body is back on though.
