Lower radiator hose and oil filter conflict

    :mad: I am replacing all of my hoses and found that the lower radiator hose outlet is VERY close to the oil filter. The old hose was one of those flex, corrugated wire reinforced hoses. There was a section that was against the oil filter that was worn down to the wire from rubbing.
    I found a formed hose that matched the old hose very close (had to cut it) but without the wire it just closes off at the bend next to the filter.

    Seems I have 2 options........have the lower neck on the radiator moved or turned up or try a smaller oil filter. It currently has a Fram PH-11.

    I may try and find one of the hoses like it had before but it worries me that the one that was in there was real close to failing......

    Not sure if it is the stock radiator? I am pretty sure that the Jeep originally had an F-head in it.

    OK so I went back at it.
    I found that the other half of the formed hose (that I was cutting up) had an almost 90 degree bend in one end. Notice the rub mark on the filter from the old hose.
    It didn't work to go to the water pump without kinking, but would it be a problem to cut it and put a coupler in the middle to make it work?
    Seems like my best solution unless there is a hose that is formed just right.

    I am going to attach a couple pictures. One is the hose and the other is just a picture of the front end. Take a look at the metal that is cut out of the shroud that the radiator attaches to. I think maybe it had something to do with the Jeep's snow-plowing days.....

    On my Diplomat years ago I had clearance issues with something??? can't remember, but I got a copper elbow the same size as the hose and used that with a short coupling piece.

    Mine comes very close also. I went to a shorter filter on my 231 powered cj 5.

    How bad would it kink if you just ran it as is? On my rig, I had a slight kink (w/ plenty of filter rub) and never had a prob. Perhaps it helped that I twisted the hose to dissipate the kink abit.
    Another 225 I owned had a Toyota radiator on it w/ the bottom neck on the driver's side. The hose to the H20 pump was long and did have a coupler on it, IIRC, and it worked fine. HTH! :beer:

    I can't really see in your cowl pic what you are refering to, but I had to cut a section out of the shroud to get a 4 cyl grill to fit with the 225. Maybe yours was done the same.

    Check the upper and lower left of the pic. There is a big triangle of metal hacked out.:(

    When I had the 225 in my Jeep, I found a copper elbow that fit snugly over the bottom radiator inlet and sweat it on so the elbow pointed just slightly downward and toward the drivers side of the Jeep. I then used a flex hose from the elbow to the water pump. Worked perfect with no clearance issues.

    sounds like you need to find a local radiator shop and have them rotate the fitting up or better yet move it over an inch or so.

    I believe that the V6 takes a PH25, which is shorter. Also, you MUST have a coil inside your lower hose or you run the risk of it collapsing, causing a sometimes hard to detect overheating problem.

    Well here's what I came up with........no coil inside. 1 1/4" copper coupler and hose clamps.
    If nothing else I got something to take in to match up.
    Seems awfully short to collapse?
