Any suggestions on cleaning up the original Serial Number plate? The lettering is worn to the aluminum, background is a stylish mix of grime, dirt, and overspray...

Brake cleaner gets the crud and paint off. Then I would use a dremil w/ polishing wheel to clean up the oxidation/pitting. Go slow then coat in petroleum jelly and remount.

    Brake "cleaner" or DOT3 fluid?

Was the original just a plain aluminum plate with the embossed lettering?

Don't use too harsh a chemical. Even Castrol's purple stuff can eat aluminum. Simple Green to an extent too.....Stick with brake cleaner or lacquer thinner. You can also use a brass wire brush with a Dremel tool.
