this one is for all your Flatfender Spring over setup guys... i am debating over which to install... a spring under suspension lift (superlift or black diamond) or do a spring over. i have a basic idea of what is involved in a spring over but i would like to hear about the compications you guys encountered and how tough it was to sort out. My main concerns are driveshaft angles and lengths as well as steering mods. i just bought a nice manual Saginaw box so i will be geting rid of the old Ross steering setup... any pics you guys would like to include (closeups!) would be cool too.
Oh yeah... my jeep has a custom body lift and ridiculously long shackles at the moment ( a little scary).
    thanks all!

SUA is the way to go. SOA just complicates things too much IMHO

    michigan_pinstripes I'm not lost, I'm wandering

Leave it spring under -- SOA = complicated, time consuming, unpredictable road manners. 3" total lift (2.5 springs + .5 shackles) is plenty, easy to do, "safe" ;)

:gasp: those shackles are quite scarey!!

I just don't believe those front shackles. R)

I'm running spring under in the rear and spring over in front of my '53 and it works well. However, you'll probably save yourself a lot of headaches by just going to a good spring under system.

I think ridiculously long is quite an understatement. Need to add foolish to it. Anyway staying with SUA is much better/simpler.

There's enough steel in those shackles to pay for a lift kit. Gadzooks. But i dig the spot light. Gotta get me one of those. Sounds like SUA is the general concensus. I would agree but I'm stupid and gonna try a spring over one day anyhow. Strictly for off road though.

My initial reaction was Why would you want to change the height, I think it sets perfect. Then I kept reading and saw the shackles. Another vote for SUA. If they were a little closer together you could hire it out as a cross country ski trailmaker.

SUA - You might want to look into Holbrooks for springs. Nice lift (@2.5 is what mine seem to be) and I have a 2" body lift on the one in the avitar as well.

if you don't understand suspensions, then go sua. the engineers that made the lift do.

    shackes....want they said.

    what's up with the grill?

Also if you do Spring under, do not be scared to look into custom leafs. For a little bit more money you can get a set of leaves made for the jeep that will lift like you want and be very very comfortable. Alot of the lifts sold are cookie cutter and may not be the right spring rate for every rig. Pay a little more and get nice custom leaves and you will be ahead of the game. I am going to do the custom spring route on the samurai, and keep it spring under.

Is your grille off of a wagon/truck?

    thanks everyone for your advice.
You can all rest easy... i am going to dump the long shackles and install a spring under... Im still going to go with the Saginaw steering though.

For those of you wondering about the Grille, i think its the stock Grille but the dumb**s that had it before me welded some sheet metal in between the fenders and the grill... its nothing a good cutting wheel cant take care of... as soon as i can get around to it ;) (clutch has priority right now... then the lift).

oh and i think the windshield is wrong too... looks like its from a CJ-3B... sits way too low... going to either replace it or chop it below the glass and extend it.

well heck, since were on the topic of weird things about my jeep... here we go: theres no tail gate on it... the body just goes all the way around with no seams, no glove box and just a single gauge dash... so if anyone can shed some light on any of that , it would be much appreciated!!

maybe the rare cj-v35 tub. nah, probably the sheet metal happy p.o. welded up/over the original setup and retro fitted a late 3b/early5 setup.

yeah the grille is definitely welded... but the rear doesnt look like it has been touched... theres no gate, no stamp no markings... just straight sheet metal from the sides across the back where the tailgate should be. kinda weird. Anyone ever seen this?

    Hey Andy4802,

Please don't cut up a good CJ3B windshield, us CJ3B owners would get sick. How about some pictures of your rear tailgate area (inside and out) and we can tell you what could have happened.

    Maybe a replacement body?

I'll take some more pics this weekend to show you guys what i am talking about. As for not cutting the windshield... if any of you CJ-3B guys have a windshield from a 2-A or 3-A you would trade for it, i'd be happy to make the swap :) If not, then cutting it and extending it will be the least expensive and relatively simple option for me (i am on a budget!). thanks all

Not sure if I'd drive that rig to the end of the driveway with those shackles.

Some, if not all DJ-3 bodies had no rear tailgate opening, and also the single-gauge dash.

you know what?... thats probably it!! the VIN tag on the firewall is from a DJ-3... i always figured it had been swapped in there to get the thing registered at some point, but maybe you are right. In all the pics ive seen of flatfenders, i've never seen one with the single gauge dash. ok so if thats the case... then i guess it would be a DJ-3 on a frame from a CJ-2a/3a/3b??

is that also why the @#%&!@# windshield is so low?

oh and about the shackles... I GET IT!! lol

I'd noticed that but forgot about it. Sure looks like a 3B windshield.
