hello everyone, i was just wondering if anyone has made their own roll cage? what kind of piping can you use? would galvanized pipe work? is it even worth fabricating your own or would buying a roll cage kit be more practical

I have built or helped build a pretty good bit of them. Check this link out first.http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32418

I wouldn't use galvanized pipe for it mainly because of the fumes when welding galvanized. I have built several out of black pipe that hold up decent in slow rollovers, but the best and safest way to go would be DOM tubing. Plus, most people with good benders only have mandrels for tubing and not pipe. There are several threads here on the subject, it mainly just depends on how much you want to spend, and how safe you want the cage to be. Steel pipe prices are getting up close to what you can buy DOM for these days.

    Black Pipe at its best:

I have rolled it several times and the pipes hold together.

I oversized my cage to include the whole jeep. I know the cage main function is to save your butt but my thoughts were I might as well save the jeep too:

I have seem the mini roll cages and nothing on the front and when they roll over they bust their raditor and front window. So they are safe but they are stuck because of the rad and well you know replacing the front window cost some $$$$$$$$.

Also I was going for the ugly factor. Since I put the roll cage and hood scope no one has tried to steal it. Plus I am so tried of women telling me my jeep is cute !! It is not cute it is bad a$$...

I have used .188 wall drill stem. It is a TOUGH bugger to bend though. Excellent on ding resistance. I sold this XJ to a fellow wheeler, and he has rolled it several times, and the cage stayed intact.

    runnamuck look out!

1 3/4" x .120 wall DOM tube. if you got a bender. if not there are several kit out on the market, alot easier. www.4wd.com has some. get the kit to tie into the frame.
