Service manual recommends changing every 2,000 miles? Find it tough to believe there is no practical way to drain the old fluid out?

Check that; check every 2,000 miles, change every 12,000.

 

Knuckle pudding… check out Lucas Hub Oil - it is formulated for exactly this type of application. I have no idea how you would get ALL the old grease/oil out of the hub. Maybe pull the bottom king pin cover and warm the hub and hope that enough drains out.

 

Never had one that held "fluid" long enough to need draining. Certainly not for 12,000 miles.

If had to clean a knuckle I'd probably use a suction gun and flush it with kerosene or thinner.

 

personally when I rebuilt my dana 25 with all new king pin bearings and new seals. I packed the king pin bearings in chassis grease with a packer then I used John Deere Corn Head Grease #0 I bought at local john deere dealer on the shelf and it was cheap and ready to use out of a grease gun cartridge.

Also corn head grease is NLGI #0 which is the weight recommended in the manual (I think for Winter season)

 

Sounds like a lot of complecated recipes. Go see your John Deere dealer and get two tubes of Cornhead Grease, about 4.00 a tube This product is talked about a lot on the 2A page

What about CV Joint Grease? I dont know the viscosity but it seems about right

 

Just wondering... can you take the felt seal out flush it with kerosene, thinner or WD40? or will that damage anything?

 

i think youll just be leaving alot of kerosene contaminated sludge in the knuckle by doing that. Better off just adding the grease i think

 

Just an FYI. 66-71 Bronco's use an open knuckle D30 with bearings. These seal the bearings with a cup on the bottom. These cups will fit in under the upper race of the D27, sealing the bearing and allowing it to be packed with grease. You will need to expand the shim pack to make up the difference, but it will keep the upper bearing lubed with the hubs unlocked. I don't believe they are available separately, but such places as Tom's Bronco Parts, Jeff's Bronco graveyard, or other Early Bronco specialty house will probably have them stocked either new or used.

 

Go to your John Deere dealer and get two tubes of corn head grease. ready made knuckle pudding.
