Took out the 2 degree shims that the last guy put in and drove the CJ to the store today......WOW!!!!!

Next I think I will tackle the body mounts.

    Huh,

I needed three degrees to get my caster better. Now I'm not scared driving on the highway.

Is that an original Renegade blue color? That is the color I tried to match when I painted mine. Think I got it a little darker.

    Looks good - what year?

Re the shim - BTDT. Took a shim out of one side of a friends CJ-5 (there was only one), and it drove a LOT better. What was the mechanic thinking?

What are these shims you speak of?

    What does caster affect?

It helps with road wander. Before the shims it felt like I was skating across ice and always correcting. Now it drives straight down the road.

Caster affects the steering's tendency to come back to center (and stay there) on its own. The stock Jeep has no shims - the caster angle is welded into the axle by the placement of the spring mounts. When a Jeep is lifted, or when a different front axle from stock is used, sometimes wedges of metal (shims) are placed between the spring pads and the springs to adjust the caster angle. Normally shims are not needed, and if added will screw up the steering geometry.

Maybe he was having a problem with the brakes pulling to one side, so he took the shim out of one side to make up the difference.R)

    It's a 1975....

Has 81000 original miles all original paint.

The guy I got it from put a lot of big dollar things into it and used it to drive the kids around the hood with the top off. (worked at MICROSOFT).....

    It has

    Disk frontend
    IDIDIT tilt steering
    2-1/2 inch lift
    1" shackles
    Full cage
    Auto meter liquid filled gauges
    Auto meter tach
    Winch 10000 lb
    PIAA lights
    Rhino liner in the tub
    WARN dif covers

The guy through a lot of bling at it and used it as a in town cruiser.

I am trying to "fix" some of the things he did (shims) leaking dif covers.....but I think I will keep her.

Thanks for the info so far next I am tackling the body mounts

Here is a pic of it on the way to my place had to stop for COFFEE.....as a interesting not we did get passed by a large group of bikers (real ones....Gypsy Jokers) and they all gave us a thumbs up as they passed...

So when you add caster do you put the fat side of the shim toward the front or the back? Pretty sure fat to the back, but I wanna confirm.
