Tailgate Jeep stamps

Alright, I've noticed on my 1970 CJ5 that the tailgate is stamped with "Jeep" with the lowercase letters, whereas the front is stamped "JEEP" in upercase. I know it is extreamly easy to swap a tailgate out, so I was wondering if mine was original. Did they make a tailgate stamped with the uppercase "JEEP" for a time, or did they just go from the "WILLYS" stamps to the "Jeep" stamps. Another question, are the tailgates with no stamps repo's or do they have a year/model too?

Not sure they ever made one with JEEP stamped in it. Me thinks they went from WILLYS to blanks to Jeep. Repros are obvious by the 2 stamped reinforcing C channel pieces on the inside of the gate. Atleast the old ones were like this. haven't seen any newer repros. Don't hold me to the part about no JEEP stamped gates. I think the "Jeep" gates are like '72-'75 Gettin late and the gears are startin to slip.:coffee:

As Dave said, in '64 IIRC, they went with a blank tailgate from the familiar "Willys" which had been there since the 2A.

Not until 1969 did they put text on it again, then it was "Jeep" not "JEEP".

It's a good site, he's got lots of nuggets stashed all over the place, but you gotta dig for 'em, at least I do. Seems like I stumbled across that site, and found a link to this site there. Been here buggin' you guys ever since.

:iagree: Mar '70 build. Jeep stamped in center w/ AMC logo in lower left. Ironically, the VIN tag and decal still say Kaiser.

Ok, so my tailgate seems more stock than it did two days ago to me. Thanks guys. I have one of those between when they switched to stamping "Jeep" and before they started puting AMC tags on it. Too bad mine has alot of holes drilled in it.

Tailgates were available until 1983 as an option IIRC. Meaning the solid panel back was standard, not that they may or may not have been available. I know they were available.

Umm. Certainly from 72-75 the tailgate was standard, and the solid panel was an added cost extra. May have changed, but AFAIK the tailgate is the default.

From 76 on the tailgate was the option and the sealed panel was standard. The pre 76 the tailgate was standard.

That's what I was thinking/referring to. Not the Intermediates. Sorry, I should've been more clear.

I guess I am still confused - my 74 does not have a tailgate-so does that mean no tailgate was the option and a tailgate was standard?
