Anyone make a tire carrier bumper from a "C" Channel

    Funds are a bit low right now, and i have a large piece of 5 inch C channel about 1/4 inch thick. I am thinking bout using it for a rear bumper. I am going to angle the sides up and thinking bout boxing in the end portions of it. My main concern is mounting the tire carrier spindles on it. I can get more weld on the spindle to mount it to the C channel than a 2x4 rec tube steel. I am just wondering if anyone has used it and how it worked out for you.

    Used tube steel on mine. I drilled hole on the top and bottom, slid in the spindle and then welded it at the top and bottom. It has held great. I even have a rack on top, which has been pretty loaded at times.

    I think the "C" channel will have a tendancy to twist with the wieght of what you are looking to put on it. As for more weld, I'm not really seeing it. If you use box tubing you will have approximately 12" of weld (2+4+2+4=12). That is alot of weld. Just my two.

    Might just want to consider welding a piece of flat on the open side of the channel where the tire mount will be to minimize that flex. Will do wonders. Could even incorperate it as a mount, if you are putting the open face in toward the frame which would eliminate the flex all together;)

    Although I doubt you will need it with 5 inch channel..........I bilt my whole car trailer frame with 5 inch........ No flex there with 4,000 pounds of jeep on it

    Unless you are mounting MichelinXL's and 128 quart cooler full of beer. I can't imagine there being any twisting. Weld your hinge spindle through top and bottom.

    I am still going to box in the end of the bumper. I did cut out a hole for a flush tail light so the metal is a bit thin right there.
