cj2a axle help

    i have a 1946 cj2a with a ford 289 under the hood. the old axle just wont hold up. i know i need to replace it, but with what? i have a 4 speed xmishion out of an old jeep pickup with an overdrive unit on it. but the axle just snaps in 2. any help would be helpfull. thanks

    Which axle? Front or rear?

    Your easiest bet may be the flanged dana 44, 30 spline rear axle that came stock in the '69?-'71 CJ-5s and CJ-6s. This should be a near bolt in for what you have and a significant increase in strength. Hope this helps.

    could also get/make a full floating rear out of the current tapered axle.


    otherwise go easy on the loud pedal.

    thanks for the info: but is a axle out of a cj5 the same with as in my cj2a? i am looking for the rear axle.

    It will be if it was from a pre-'72 CJ5. Your CJ2A has an offset rear axle to accomodate the Dana 18 transfer case, and in '72 (I think) AMC went to the Dana 20 transfer case which needed a centered differential.
