The rims on my 48 are called "solid" (no open slots). They're 16 X 4.5 but I would think you would want the wider rims. The bolt pattern and center hole are the same as the later CJs. Also, no bumps to hold hub caps on.
They're expensive at about $100.00 each for repros.

The rims w/ the bumps are Motor Wheel rims. They were the alternate supplier.
The 16" rims came in a few widths.
4" solids for prototype jeeps slat grills and CJ2's. 4.5" solids both military and civilian for the slat grills and column shifts 2A's. Then they had the slotted 4" rim for the 2 wheel drive wagons the 4.5" for just about everything else. The 5" was pickup until the J truck when they came out w/ a 6" x 16
    Gump you have solids?

Man, can somebody put together a series of photos of each kind of wheel and what they were used on? That would be great to have in the new tech photo section.

I thought they were all pretty much the same. I bought 3 old Willys wheels a few months ago and have them buried in storage, but now I'm not sure what the hell they are.

I want to put the right kind of stock, original wheels on my '56 CJ5, but now I'm not sure what to look for.

I'll try to remember to bring my camera to work and post a photo of that odd one I have. I agree that the $100 a pop repro's are pricey. That's why I jumped on the set I got when it was offered for $200 total. Buy five wheels @$100 each and then get NDT's and tubes and you're starting to equal the pimped up Escalade guys wheel budget. eek! At least their rigs will never be as cool as ours. That's what we tell ourselves anyways. R) :stout:

OK, I'm assuming that the correct wheels for my fittysix SHOULD NOT have hubcap bumps....can anyone confirm this? I think I have three of the right ones, but the fourth is a little different, and I still need #5 for a spare.

Correct. The hubcab keepers were a jeepster wagon deal

So riddle me this... If I had 16x8's with a 4.25" BS and the 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern, would those rims work?

Essentially I want to take the still-quite-new cooper discoverer A/T's from my old beat up and now deceased pickup and recycle them for the CJ, since the tires the CJ came with are badly weathered from all the time the rig has been sitting around waiting for my wallet and schedule to permit completion of the project...

The tires are about the same size overall for what I have on my CJ now, except they are 16". I beleive I already have wide-ish rims, but I'm not sure how wide the rims are that the tires are mounted to currently...

At a loss... but I need to move soon, cuz I have to get rid of the truck, and it's not going to the crusher with $500 worth of 10,000 mile-used tires :)

EDIT: BTW- Sorry this is in the resto forum, and I'm not talking resto-specific... I didn't realize where the thread was located when I searched and replied...
