I came up with similar info as Patrick, and this unit is similar to what many folks here have recommended.
If anyone can accurately define why the number of turns has an upper and lower limit, I'd sure like to hear it. None of my FLAPS can tell me exactly what that means.

Some of the saginaw boxes have internal stops, others rely on mechanical stops on the vehicle. This is what I was told.

I've wondered if this is a variable ratio box. Should be 13:1 to 17:1.
Not sure how that would change the LTL turns though.

I'm getting ready to mount a J20 box on my CJ6 frame and I have a couple questions.

What size tubing to use for spacers to go through the frame?
Is 3/8 thick enough for the mount plate?
What is the offset of the mount holes, like how long the spacers need to be for the box to sit flat?

    thanks

My mount is 1/2" thick, the mount offsets are (3) 3/4" thick stands and (1) .250 thick stand. All of the stand offs (6 total) are 1" diameter with a 15/32" hole thru them, I don't use tubing I use solid bar stock.

I'm about to reinforce the front of my cj3a frame to mount my box and I now notice that the bottom of the frame is wider than the top. how is every body compensating for the deference, I cant see it in the pictures. thanks Phil

I just started installing ps on my 75 cj5 today. I got the pump and bracket off of a 90 something dodge d-150 4x4 with either a 318 or a 360 and it bolted up nicely to the drivers side of my 304 after i cut off one of the tabs on the bracket and used some washers to shim it out so the pulley lined up. Im gona pull the gear box off of a 90 something chevy truck tomorrow and see how it goes. Just looking at it with out pulling any measurements it looks like it will work with a little fabing. I'll get the rite year models off the trucks tomorrow, i'm also gona pull the tilt steering colum out of the chevy and see what i can do with that.

Well, I started some time ago totally restoring my 57 Willys CJ5 and will be showing the build in the builders thread. But, I thought I'd start by showing the Saginaw conversion 1st. I got the pump and the steering box off of a 70's Buick station wagon at one of the local auto wreckers (excuse me, "Pick and Pull"). I put in a 231 Buick v6 and had to come up with some brackets and pulleys for the pump. Ebay and wrecker came up with those parts. I don't have all the pics from the beginning of the build because the hard drive in my laptop gave up the ghost and I lost all the pics, (no, I didn't back it up) bummer. We have a tractor supply in our little town and the guys there made up the fluid pressure lines for the box to pump application. I had a Advanced Adapters bracket and utilized it to mount the box on the frame. I cut the top of the bracket so I could lower the box so it lines up under the cross-member. Here's some pics to start this thing off.

Gear box (including pitman arm) and pump from a 1985 Cherokee XJ with a 4-cylinder. Open knuckle D30 from a 1972 CJ-5 upgraded to 11" drums, stock '72 tie rod and drag link. Power steering pressure line from a 1985 CJ-7 with a 4-cylinder, return line gear box fitting from a mid-1990's Chevy S-series Blazer. Pump mounting bracket for L-134 built by me, pivot/tension assembly from the '85 XJ.

Box is from a YJ, bracket is from a 71' commando.

Here are some pictures of my steering swap. Its not saginaw, and its not power, but figured some of you might still like to see it. In my opinion, a little jeep like mine with only 32" tires needed nothing more than a manual steering set-up, and it actually works great!

  16. I would like to see some pictures of steering columns and their attachment to the saganaw box. I plan to use the stock column, I bought Herm's kit with intermediate shaft and 2 u-joints. I'd like to see what you guys have done. Thanks, David

Do you have any more pictures on how you routed the shaft around the front dump exhaust manifold? I haven't seen it done cleanly and am currently doing a power steering swap on my 66 cj.
