stock or not on exhaust

I need some advice. I have a 60 3B . It is stock besides the weber carb and petronix electronic ignition.I need to replace the manifold and exhaust. Do I go bone stock , do I go stock on the manifold and put a larger exhaust with a flowmaster muffler or do I go with I clifford header and a custom exhaust. I was leaning toward the clifford header but I read that it may not have enough back pressure

I think stock with a flowmaster would sound cool, but then again I am biased, I'll put a flowmaset on a blender if I can get away with it..

The Clifford head if you still have stock steering (ross) is doable as to back pressure that isn't a concern. What will be a consern is if you can get a Header out of Clifford they are not a common stock item for them and I have heard from a number of guys that it has taken up to 6 months for delievery. I wouldn't start anything until you talk with Clifford and find out when you can get one.

I put one of their headers on our Mustang and aside from the high temp powder coating they told me would hold up great lasting 45 minutes before it dripped onto the driveway I love it. Make sure if it's powder coated you sand blast it off and paint it with header paint.

As to the flow master why not they are built like tanks

Beings you live in a warm state you won't have carb icing worries with a header.

    I'd go fo it.

Matt, I think the thing to keep in mind here is how you are going to use your Jeep. The F-head engine is a torquey low-RPM engine that will never see 4,000 RPM in most cases. The volumetric capacity of the stock system should be more than adequate for the intended use. I have to agree with Scott though, in that a more efficient muffler would sound cool on the F-head. From personal experience in my drag racing days, you lose a great deal of bottom-end torque when you uncork your exhaust, but you gain high-rpm power due to the less restrictive flow. Again, the F-head is a low-rpm beast whose hallmark is torque.

Now, for a personal opinion: I'm not a big fan of tube headers on a trail rig because they get dinged up very easily and they don't take much in the way of a lateral torque load before they start to leak like a sieve. Headers also tend to put the pipes in less than ideal places where they can get banged up and bent. Ask anyone here who has a Dauntless and headers!

The bottom line IMHO is this: If you open up the exhaust too much, you'll LOSE power down low where you can really use it on the trail, and arond town. The beneft of a completely free-flowing exhaust will be some added horsepower at the top end, so you ought to be up around 80+ hp at wide-open throttle.

IIRC a member built a header (Potsi) for his F head and lost a lot of Bottom end.

I run the F head with the stock system and a nice quiet Muffler...

    Kinda stealth mode....... :hurrican:

The idea of headers is not what kills bottom end torque its the type of header that is used and the size and length of the primary tubes along with collector size, if the primary tubes are kept small then the torque curve will stay lower in the rpm and still allow the engine to breath better than factory manifolds, tri-y headers will work much better on a mid rpm application then the standard 4 into 1 design. To me the biggest draw back to headers is the heat they generate underhood and the extra noise from being thin, Doug Thorley makes Tri-y headers and makes them out of 14 gage material rather than 16-18 gage material, they are quieter.

Good point Mike, there for a minute I was back in 1980, trying to beat a set of big-block Chevelle headers to fit my Grand Sport chassis. Same chassis as a Chevelle? Pheh!

True but you would hope that Clifford realized this and built the headers for a low rpm motor.

    I am sure they did......
With the headers you will have to do something with the carb......Weber...or 4 BBL ect to benifit from the headers IMO YMMV.

That's the dilemma I'm in Billy. If I do build a custom 2x1 intake, I'm gonna need to do the exhaust too and I like the stock setup. Mutter mutter...

Still worth doing on Manifolds IMO.
You could just up the tubing size.

I think clifford makes the headers for the racing swamp buggies where custom cams and wild intakes with a 4 BBL are the norm.

Bigger tubes for the exhaust system and a muffler you like. You won't notice a big difference in my experience. UNLESS you are currenty running on two cylinders. Remember these are just air pumps and they're not gonna pump much more at low rpm, and we all know how long a L or F head gonna live constantly above 3000 rpm.Things like your pertonics and hotter spark and a little bigger tube(I like 2")will work well with your stock exhaust and put a smile on your face.

Thanks everybody for the feedback. I think I will go with a stock manifold and wait and see with the exhaust. This is a hunting vehicle and part time driver. The clifford header is expensive and I don't want to hurt the off road ability

doin' some research on getting more out of an F-head. Here's what i found on that Clifford exhaust:

Clifford part number: 57-0432 Price: $299.00 Shipping Weight: 30.00 lbs.

    Holy dead threads Batman!

Keep in mind that the Clifford headers absolutely will not fit if you have a Saginaw steering conversion. The guy at Clifford told me so straight up.

yeah, I was a little apprehensive to post it-- that's better than 4 years! :)

make your own, ~$100 will do it, assuming you have the tools. long tube 4-1 header with the collector under the tub will keep the low end torque, and gain your upper end hp at the same time.

Long and small to medium diameter header tubes can actually enhance the bottom end. Another point that should be discussed here is if you want to put an extra fuel tank in someplace in the future, now would be the time to route the exhaust to accomodate it.

why, its fun sitting on 10 gallons of fuel....keeps you from doing something stupid, haha
