Windshield ? Again....

I am new to the earlier stuff and I just purchased a 1958 CJ5. According to my research I have a "cowl" style windshield that is split down the center. Were these sold as an option in 58'? I am certain that this is original equipment. Also Iam confused about the "Willys" logo. This one has them but my research suggests that it should not? I also know that thiswillys has never been painted. The Serial number is 57548. Also does anyone know of any good sources for parts in the sacramento area for restoration. I need a set of front and rear seat and I believe that is just the tip of the iceberg. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou... So much for my research techniques. I am sure that I read that only the earlier than 58 models had the willys logo on the side and mine should say jeep?

It says Willys on the side or Jeep?

We've discussed the "Willys" logo on the side of the "early" early cj-5's as oposed to the JEEP on the side here before.

Tailgate is the only place (other than the VIN tag) off hand that Willys appears, speedometer maybe on the earliest CJ-5s too I think.

My vehicle says Willys on the sides. It has been suggested to me that this is not original but I know the original owner. he used it in a walnut orchard from 1958 to 1989 and then was stored at the rear of a equipment shop for 16 years until he sold it to my friend in may. The original owner says it has never been painted or altered in any way. it is 100% complete except for the rear seat and the passenger seat which were removed so it could be used to apply herbicides and "mis-placed" (?).

I would love to get s/n# and properly date it. My '56 says JEEP on the side, I've seen a speedo from a '55 that said Willys but the tub was gone so I can't verify the side panel lettering.

One would think if this jeep truly had 'willys' on side it must be a '54 pre-production model with a very low s/n#. Other identifying features (ie-foot starter, reverse shackles) would rule out '58, unless the factory had one old tub lying around?
There are factory photos of preproduction 5's w/ 'willys', weren't they still fighting over the right to the name 'jeep' until '53-'54?
My early '55 s/n# 10934 has 'jeep' on the side. Only 933 earlier than that.
    Got to see pics.
Also did any after market sellers/overseas distributers make tubs w/ 'willys' to avoid trademark lawsuits?
Interestingly, I just checked the photos I have of pre-production 5's, they do have split windshield.

Willys is trademarked too I thought. Hence the lack of repro tailgates until recently when a deal was struck.

I've seen a picture of a cj5 prototype with willys on the side, but never seen or heard of a production cj5 with willys, only jeep.

Willys on the speedo was the king-seeley speedo.

    There were basically three speedos
WILLYS speedo with silver on the inside and willys in script just below center on the face (in red) - king-seeley. I'm not 100% sure that the 'willys' speedos were ever installed in cj's from the factory. I have a 3b with the 'willys' speedo, but the 'willys' speedo was never in the 3b from the factory since the large cluster was not used 'till 57 in the 3b.

King-seeley speedo -- sort of a deep green.

Warner speedo - the 'classic' speedo that everyone has seen.

I've got one of each of these if someone wants a picture of one.

Tonka is s/n 378, that puts him well within the first two weeks of production.

He has "JEEP" on the side

The speedo is the King-Sealy "Silver Face" unit, according to the parts book used up to S/N 49248 for 5s & 35522 for 3Bs.

Sometime back someone posted that the first hundred or so 5s off the line were kinda different. I know that the FSM shows a "Early" five with the Throttle etc. controls on the left side of the dash. Tonk has these holes in the dash but the controls are in the normal spots around the speedo, as is in fact shown in the '55 owners manual.

I'd love to see some pictures (HintHint ;)) of one of those "Earlyearly" 5s.
