Help Date This Old Cj5…

So the backstory is a coworker friend is set to inherit his father in laws old CJ-5. It’s in Wyoming, we’re in the Florida panhandle. One pic only so far and if memory serves him right he recalls his family saying it’s a 1960’s Jeep. As soon as he finds more info, I’ll update this posting…

 

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the battery cover on the passenger side of the cowl disappeared after 1963. If so, that would be the most recent model year this Jeep could be, though it might date from anywhere in the 1955-63 time frame.

 

Yes on both the battery cover and parking lights. Looking at the rear view mirror, it looks a little too small to be the 50’s but hard to tell. You need to get a pic of the serial number plate that is attached to the firewall under the hood on the drivers side. That will have numbers that can tell you for sure. These things have been so modified over the years that some times it’s hard to tell without lots of data points. You can see the edge of it on mine (‘58) in the upper right of the pic below.

Smaller ones. The larger ones started is the 60’s as I recall.

My co-worker got a pic of the vin tag… I’m deciding it as a 1955

 

Speedometer face can be a big clue to dating during first CJ5 years.

And the heater location was under-dash on the passenger side in the beginning. Heater optional.

Looks like field modification to me, as if the door was too "floppy" or something.
