Unconventional Sawmill Build

The volume of sawdust created is seriously impressive.

 

Yeah, that’s going to need to be addressed at some point. It’s really starting to pile up.

I used to shove planer shavings in my fire place until they started a fire in the flue....Maybe make a rotary sawdust pellet press or maybe an extruder and burn them that way? It also makes ok mulch...

 

Sawdust works great on ice. Doesn't melt it, but gives you good traction. That's what my Dad did with most of it. Plus it doesn't tear up the concrete like salt does.

It’s impossible to split and it sucks to burn anyway.

I might work towards building a wood shed. Tarps get old real fast.

 

will it hold up? or it will need to painted/clear coated or stained?

 

I’ll treat the posts. It’ll be fine for around here. I’ll have to mount the beams above grade obviously, but good enough for a wood shed.

 

Just take your five gallon bucket of used motor oil, and soak one end of the posts in em for a day or two, you'll be fine =P Might make a spotted owl grow three heads, but it'll be years before you have to worry about rot.

 

I cut up some more of the lawnmower deck and added another two inches of width to the chute. It works much better now. No more dust in my face. And while the guard was off, I tightened and sharpened the chain. Huge improvement. Now I can basically cut at whatever speed I can push it through.



I cut up a small log just for more stickers.

 

thanks, now I'm looking into a portable mill to turn all my blown over cedar into boards. hate to see it go to waste, hopefully I can find someone.

 

Good luck. Around here people are waiting 6 to 12 months to get delivery on bandmills.

Then they discover the lumber business takes a lot more than just owning a mill.

 

The era of that stuff is long, long gone. I'm not sure you could find a mill to cut it. I love old photos like that. I can spend hours looking at Darius/Clark Kinsey glass plate photos. All the detritus that wasn't the actual subject is as interesting as the rest.

 

While I had the mill out, I flipped it over and added some 6” cribbing made from one of the trees I cut up.



This will gain me 6” of sawdust depth between cleanups.
