Engine Oil Leak Checking

Hey guys, another rookie question here, but I want to be sure I don’t hurt anything serious.

I just got my new crank pulley and timing cover re-installed. New seals and gaskets. I’m ready to fill with oil and check it. Belt, fan and radiator are out of the Jeep.

Can I run the engine briefly without the radiator and coolant? I’d like to check for any oil leaks or issues with my seals and stuff, and if it passes muster THEN I’ll reinstall the belt, fan, and radiator and check that.

    Thanks!

Opinions vary on how long, but the short answer is yes. 30 seconds or so won’t hurt anything.

Yep. I suspect you could run several times that 30 seconds but no use tempting fate. It's not like running it with no oil.

Most drag cars don't even have coolant and they can do a burnout and stage. I think you're fine.

Okay, thanks for backing me up guys. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t about to do something really stupid.

I just added oil and fired her up (without cooling systems) for the first time in weeks. Ran her for just about 45 seconds or so and no apparent leaks, sprays, or drips! Woohoo! New timing cover seal, pulley, and Right Stuff gasket seem to be working great.

Thanks again for backing me up!
