Dauntless Oil Pump

I recently developed a serious oil leak at the oil pump mounting g gasket. Pulled it apart today to replace the gasket. What do you guys think of the condition of everything else? There is some wear on the timing cover, but you can barely feel it with your fingernail.








I'm inclined to just replace the gasket and run it...this is a 160k miles original engine so it isn't going to last forever anyway....when it's time for a rebuild I'll replace all the pump components.

 

if it had oil pressure before . I would run it

 

The kit is cheap and comes with a gasket. No sense to not change it while apart. Melling k201.

Agreed the kit is cheap and you can add a thrust plate.

FSM says to pack the pump with petroleum jelly so it will prime...is this still the preferred method?

 

Yes, I still pack the housing with petrolium jelly. Those wear plates linked in post 6 only address the bottom side. Most of the wear occurs inside the timing cover side. I often resurface the bottom filter plate with fine sandpaper on plate glass. Put a fresh set of gears in the pump and reassemble.

Ime 40 is sufficient.

 

Well, the 40 psi spring is in...new pump gears, gasket and wear plate. No leaks so far !

 

I have no idea what spring we used on the 69 but that whole job is miserable with the engine in the jeep. Glad it went smoothly for you!

 

I pulled the RF fender off...made it fairly easy

 

Put new gears and check clearance if good pull gears and block sand gasket surface on both sides clean good reasemble my engine fully rebuilt idles at 14 psi cruising well over 30 bearing clearance was spot on I say block sand the pump housing gasket surface cause on mine after assembly it leaked a little bit I unbolted it blocked sanded both surfaces reassembled torqued to spec and wall lah no leak good luck

 

So on my fresh rebuild, the machine shop put the engine together and primed the oil system through the distributor. I'm pretty sure the oil pump does not have petroleum jelly. The engine has been sitting for ~6mo, but I'm about ready for a first start. Is it worth taking the oil pump apart and gooping it up with petroleum jelly, or just prime the oil system again?

Absolutely the 40. The higher pressure spring makes the motor leak everywhere. These motors were always low/no oil pressure motors.

 

Prime with drill, no need to repack
