Hi I’m trying find out how to replace the bearing on my 67 Jeepster front shaft. Have ground down the weld by the u-joint and can’t see where the joint is. Is the joint shaft smaller and slide inside the shaft. Thanks for any help

Your description is confusing me. Are you talking about the slip yoke?

No , I have the 2 piece driveshaft and on the front shaft is a pressed on carrier bearing to keep the shaft away from the auto tranny pan. I tried to send pic but was to big and can’t figure out how to make smaller. What is the max size of a file to upload

A quick and easy way if you have Microsoft is to open your photo with "Paint". Select resize. Choose something less than 100 for example 50. Save as the picture. Should be able to use the new smaller picture.

The bearing sits in an extension bracket.

I've not tried to separate the bearing from the shaft.
I have a manual transmission and I have removed the cast iron bearing support, replaced the output yoke with the larger 1310 u-joint model yoke and gone to a driveshaft without the intermediate bearing after I did a suspension lift.
I don't think that is possible to do that with an automatic transmission, he needs the extension to maintain clearance for the transmission pan. I have been told by the guys on the JCCA Jeepster/Commando forum that the shaft will need to be cut, the bearing removed & replaced and the shaft welded back together.

Ok that makes sense. Never heard of them referred to as a steady bearing, just carrier bearings.

I agree with @OzFin . Looks like that bearing can't be replaced without a trip to a driveline shop.

Hi guys thanks for the replies. I talked to a driveline shop and they said they probably couldn’t just cut it and weld back together without it warping the shaft. It would be nice to know how they were put together , butt welded, or a shaft on the joint end going into the actual driveshaft. Like I said earlier , have ground off the weld but can’t see a joint. Not home right now , so can’t send a pic. Will see if my friend that has it right now can send a smaller file pic that I could post

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

For obvious reasons, Jeep didn't furnish that bearing separately.
Made you buy the complete shaft assy.

The yoke fits inside the tube. where you ground off the weld is where the yoke goes inside the tube. Grind a bit more and whack the yoke with a hammer. You will see a hairline crack. Keep at it until you free it up and it separates. If that driveline shop can't weld that back up, they aren't a driveline shop. Its also a front driveshaft, a short one with a carrier bearing.. Come on.

  14. and you also don't have a properly functioning driveshaft...

I can't believe they made a non replaceable carrier bearing. Big trucks use those, often 3 on one shaft, and they can easily be pressed off and back on the shaft.

I think I have one with a good bearing. I went to the one piece shaft as described in OZFINS post.

Would you part with it, and is it from a standard or auto if they are different. Mine is for an auto TH400. Will try tapping the yoke to see if it separates . How much would you want for your shaft? The shipping would be crazy from NY to BC Canada. Thanks for the replies from everyone . Craig

The last parts I shipped to BC got held hostage in customs and they wanted some kind of fee which was more than the parts were worth. They wouldn't deliver or send back. As far as I know the parts are still there. So probably can't ship.
Seems like the short piece with carrier bearing would be the same AT or 3 speed. Not sure though.

Do you remember how much it cost to ship to BC. It’s dumb that they would want duty on a used auto part. What do u want for your shaft. My buddy did get the bearing off after a tip from another member. I can get the bearing and rubber cover for it off of Partsdude I think for like $50 plus shipping and duty, grrr

I shipped some stuff to Canada a while back and it was really expensive. I used USPS and they got there, but the shipping and fees were more than I wanted for the part.
