Red Spark Plugs?

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by Randy Benedict, Sep 21, 2020.

  1. I'm diagnosing a dauntless that runs rough. I pulled the plugs and found the electrodes on the ends are red on one head. Has anyone seen this before? Any thoughts? Does not loose water and no water in oil. Intake manifold gasket? 20200921_101312.jpg

Here is a good reference I've used for quite a while.

Where do you see red? Looks ok to me.

  4. The plugs on the one head are all normal looking. All 3 on the other side are orangeish red. Could the intake manifold gasket on the one side be leaking?

If it were, I think I'd expect to see a whiter plug nose, from a lean/hot condition.

While yours show a relative difference, I'd say they are all acceptable. But if any concerned me more, it would be the lighter ones.

If it's an odd fire and the banks look different, it could be the wrong distributor, the right distributor with the wrong cap, or the right distributor being clocked wrong.

Here's a thread about the correct distributor/cap: 225 rich on pass side bank, lean on drivers side.

And here's a thread about clocking an odd-fire distributor properly: 225 rich on pass side bank, lean on drivers side.

  7. I found the problem! The screws on one of the butterflies in the throttle body had came loose and was causing the gap to open too much. Venturie was allowed to draw excess gas through the secondary on one side of the manifold. I found that the gap was supposed to be 0,020. I set the gap on both butterflies and used loctite on the threads. Reinstalled the carb and now it runs great! New one for me! Thanks for e everyone's comments and help.
