    Hello,
My F134 has an original starter, 12v, for 129 tooth ring gear. Lately I've been having an issue with bendix function. When I turn the key to start the starter spins but the bendix does not engage. It will work on the second or third try. After starting you can hear the bendix is slow to disengage.
Is this something that might be solved by cleaning and lubricating the bendix? Or does this sound like replacement parts are needed? I've never had one of these apart and I'm trying to make a plan before I pull the starter.
    Thanks,
    Ken

Prolaby. Mine stick once in a while after long idle spells, but usually it heals itself after a while. Is the starter itself spinning fast enough, clean connections and getting good power?

I'd imagine a very lightweight or 'dry' lube would be best. Pulling the starter is easy enough. Disconnect the battery first.

Replacing a bendix is simple and they are available if you go that route.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll try lubricating the bendix and if that fails may try the Toyota starter route. I'm a bit leery of that since there was one on the jeep when I bought it and it didn't always want to engage. Nasty gear clash. The flywheel has been re-ringed since then however.

I took it apart today and cleaned and greased the bendix. So far it is behaving better, hopefully it will last.
I managed to use a crow's foot to get the upper bolt out without unbolting the floor. When I put it back I used a socket head bolt, this seems easier.

??? I can pull my starter working from under the hood, no problem or floor issues. 3/4" wrench as I recall. (???)

On mine the upper bolt was impossible to remove without a crow's foot unless the floor pan was as least loosened. Can't get an angle for a socket, can't get a box or open end wrench in there.
