Has anyone tried to use a c-clip or snap ring here, the horseshoe clips seem so rinky dink!

No. You always get a new one in the hardware kit. Seems quite solid to me. Never heard of a failure, and never heard this sentiment before. Millions of Ford light trucks used these brakes. Literally!

I broke one of the horsehoe clips when doing my ebrake the other day (looks like it had used a few times)....I went and used two snap rings (on a single pin installed opposite directions - but probably not necessary) that look like this - thought it worked out perfect for $0.10 each at the local hardware. I had already done the first one re-using the horseshoe clip and it was mounted back on, otherwise i would have done both brakes with them.

Tim are you referring to the shoe clip? I think the OP is referring the the retaining clip that goes on the back of the pivot pin for the e-brake lever? You probably know that....and if I had bought a small parts refurb kit it would probably have come with them....

Maybe it's not in every hardware kit. Two of them here, and yes they hold the parking brake lever to the forward shoe IIRC. An e-clip as above will work I presume. I have reused the old ones too. Note you squeeze the ends together to secure, and you spread them to remove.

When I bought the emergency parking brake levers for mine, the e-clips were not included. I think I remember seeing a washer addition to the e-clip in a brake parts drawing.

Does it require a flat washer on the shoe before the e-clip is installed?

Edit - go with mike's comment below - I've never seen the the original style washers with horseshoe clips - they were long gone by the time i opened up the brakes on either my cj7 or the willys....Using the e-clip I used two of the them to help take up a bit of space...I think a washer and single e-clip would be fine as well....

the wave washers in the bottom of tim's picture are used with the e-brake lever and clip.As I recall the washer goes between the brake shoe and lever.Anti-rattle device.

Just for clarity, the horseshoe clips (for lack of a better name) are not e-clips. The clips that James (FinoCJ) shows above are e-clips. They are wrong for this, but should be fine if they fit.

That retainer clip , that Tim refers to, is a Bendix part that has been used for many, many years. Not familiar with Fords, but all the GM's I've been around , since I was a Lad , have used them. :)

Thanks to all who responded, I know that it is such a generic subject but I want to do this once, I have been working on old trucks forever, and I have always used the horseshoe clips, was just wondering if there has been a better mousetrap invented over all these years, I guess you don’t fix what isn’t broken!
