Need Dauntless Delco Distributor Fly Weight Source

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by Randy Benedict, Mar 29, 2020.

  1. Is there a source for purchasing fly weights for the dauntless delco distributor?

Automotive stores used to sell "advance curve kits" which included one or two sets of weights, and about 4 sets of springs. The weights were usually lighter than stock, and the springs were in color coded pairs, but could be mixed and matched for the desired advance curve.
These were pretty time-consuming to set up trial-and-error style; installing weights and springs, install distributor, check the results with a timing light.
I used to have a friend that had a distributor machine that made things a lot quicker to set one up.
Look on the internet to see if anyone still sells advance curve kits, and see what the contents are.

If you aren't able to find any online, try calling Jeff Schlemmer at Advanced Distributors. Jeff rebuilds Delco distributors (he did a fantastic job on mine), and IIRC, he installs new weights and springs when he does so. I don't know if he'd sell them to you outright, but if not he may be able to tell you where you can find them:

  5. With everything replaced and a new oem carb, dauntless had a slight hesitation or slight miss at idle, even with everything electrical new and timing set. 30 years ago I had one with a similar issue. Got new advance weights and springs installed today. Wow. What a difference. She purrs. Those fly weights seem to never get maintained (lubricated) Thanks for all.
