yes - or pull #1 spark plug and have firend/wife stick her finger over the hole and feel for air burst....

I dont have any friends or wife, so I looks like I will either have to plug the hole with my finger or pull a valve cover.

You can put a paper towel in the hole of the spark plug as well.

So would 180 degrees off cause a high idle and backfire with flames out the exhaust on the passenger side?

    No
Yes, but so would inadvertently miss wiring a couple of sparkplug wires.

I double checked the plug wire locations

This might not be your case, but I had messed up the timing and mixture screws so bad on mine trying to chase the cold manifold problem, that when I finally did have it right, I had to re tune the carb, idle, etc.

I've been messing around all morning and I can't seem to get the timing right. I have set it to what I believe is tdc a few times rotate the oil pump slightly and installed the distributor so rotor points at number 1. The engine does not appear to run smooth. I even tried setting it to 8 degrees before tdc. I either get backfiring as the engine warms up or backfire through the carburetor. I still could be 180 degrees off? Any suggestions?

After checking plug wire routing 100x, I'd probably try to check the spark at each plug...I like to put my timing light on each plug just to see it flash in a consistent manner....I am not that familiar with HEI, but I'd eventually move to the coil...with HEI I assume the coil is in the cap? Is there a way to swap that out just to ensure its not the issue? I don't think it would cause these kind of problems, but I think many go to a wider gap on the plugs with HEI. Maybe the plug wires are old and deteriorated and the HEI has found the weakness?

Are you pulling and plugging the vacuum tube when setting timing?

I did plug the vaccum tube. Thought of that. I am about to give up for today as I'm frustrated. It feels like I just cant get the timing right. A few backfires through carb and exhaust so something is firing off. Mist have set it to tdc at least 10 times now. No luck

Do you have full 12 volts going in to the hei distributor when checked it should be close to 14.7 volts . If you used wire from old distributor it will not be full volts . You can run a jump wire from keyed 12volt to distributor . Hope this helps. Hei needs full 12 volts to work properly. With points you only get full 12 volts when starting engine then it drops so you don’t fry the points.

I think I would start at square 1 again. With distributor out inspect the drive gear. Did the pin shear allowing the shaft to move within the gear. Then go through the distributor installation and timing. I have seen cases where the drive gear and shaft do not stay in sync because of a faulty drive gear pin.

Does the installation of HEI require removing the dropping resistor on the firewall? Did you jumper across it?

Yes it does and I ran a new wire from key. I may have found an issue. Gasket under carburetor is ripped and is a likely vacuum leak. I'll fix it and see what happens tomorrow

I am cautiously optimistic I repaired the gasket under the carburetor and it starts and runs very good. Slightly an odd idle but if I remember correctly odd fires have a weird idle to begin with.

    Are the temperatures balanced now?

Much more so. All six are hot now in a good way.

I repeat. Yay! Good job sticking it out and working through the trouble.

You should open the plugs up a bit with HEI - also, I've gone to E3 plugs with all of my HEI installs once I get them running good.

Word of experience - ALWAYS start over from step one when restabing the Distro. I use a long socket on the front crank, pull plug one, feel the pulse, set TDC. Depending on altitude, @ 6 degrees works good for timing. I also use a marker on the distro body where post one sits so when I stab it, I know what I'm lining up to for starters.
