How close is the back of the axle flange to the adjuster? Probably an illusion but the picture makes it look very close.

Or is that part of the parking brake mechanism?

And no bearing/axle movement up or down whatsoever?

If it isn't anything that everyone has suggested I'm certainly stumped.

It's probably something that you're not expecting would be the cause.

Pull the axle, repack or replace the bearing and inspect the seal. Could just be a dry bearing. No way of knowing until you pull it to see.

I agree with the others here on tearing into it; don’t wait for the problem to possibly skyrocket and cost you any more money and downtime than it has to.

I had a growl coming from the rear of my 81 ‘5 and ignored it. I drove to a football game my senior year and almost didn’t make it home because I was watching my axle/tire walk in and out as I drove home. Ruined the axle and a few other pieces.

If it’s your DD you can’t go wrong saving up for a backup.

If it were to be a bad bearing how long would I be able to safely run it?
